im looking to purchase a new machete to use for cleaning small brush or trimming areas.. ive been looking at the gerbers in the cabelas catalogs but i thought i would ask if anyone has a good one they prefer or can reccommend..

try sogs fusion line. i got a jungle primative and have had it for 5 months and is still working like when i got it. primitive only costs 40$ best money ever spent. i'm always with a matchete or knife by my side

I'm a land surveyor, and make my living, with a machete either in my hand, or close by. A few years ago, I bought a few from a military surplus store, made by Ontario Knife. They have a 22" heavy blade, with U.S. stamped at the base of the blade, are easily, and quickly sharpened with an Accusharp tool, and last a loooong time. We typically only break them in the dead of winter, after they've been used for a year or so. They get brittle and probably see more stress than intended, since we use them daily. Cost about $25.

A Ghurki knife is much more efficient than a machete for clearing brush, chopping wood, survival uses in the bush, and even defensive uses in combat. While they do look somewhat odd to a Westerner's eye, they have been in use for centuries in some of the heaviest jungle conditions imaginable and by some of the most feared jungle warriors in existence.

Like lance, I'm a surveyor....

I like the Tramontina 24". It holds an edge great! I can get it as sharp as a pocket knife.

I think they still make them. I've had the one I use now for about 8-9 years....It has quite a few notches in it too....Multiple rattlesnakes, and almost a couple of dogs that were vicious. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

ok i done some searching but cant find a place to see the price on the ghurki knife gc.. i read some very good articles on it. that thing is almost 2lbs and 1/4 thick.. it should be able to cut some brush..hahaha

thanks hardcore.. they block out all the gun stuff or related stuff at work so ill have to wait till i get to the house to check it out... ive been blocked so many times this morning they will probably take my internet from me..hahaha.. ill check it out though.. thanks for the help..

Thought I'd posted on this yesterday but may have been logged out...senior moment..again.

Anyhow I like the Tramontina, a Brazil made machete I find at the local farm stores..heavy, 3 rivet wood handle, they are tough and the last two(2) cost me about $7.50 each.

I'm not kind to machetes but these have worked well for me.

lance, can i get the one you are talking about at the army surplus stores still???

I just bought a few this summer at the Military Surplus store down the road.

I am also a land surveyor, and I started my career in the soaking wet Willamette Valley that just chokes with vine maple, black berries, hawthorne's and locust. And that's in just the meadows. It gets even thicker in the woods. I just didn't use a machette, I abused them. My favorite machete of all time is just like Mr. Brown - an Ontario that I picked up at an Army-Navy surplus store. I've tried all kinds, sizes and shapes, but I always go back to that Ontario when I need to brush some line. It's a good knife.

Collins used to be the cat's meow in machetes.....A few years ago they were bought out by another company. They still are decent machetes, but they don't have the steel they once did.

They went the same way the Scrade Old Timer knives did.....foreign.
