I need a non-lethal gun for deer

I can recall back to my youth that my pop had a problem with strays getting into the trash cans at nite. Being a family of bow hunters at the time,my ol pop drilled out a golf ball and popped an insert into it. He screwed that bad boy on the end of an arrow and shot it out of his compound. Never killed a stray, but it sure would knock them off their feet. Nver had much of a problem with the strays coming back after that.

get a "trip wire" hooked up to an ecall with a yote howls
lol
or try a cheap walmart kids bow qith rubber blunts
it will scare them quite a bit
also if legal to get blowguns you can get the bigbore blowguns with the steel tipped stun darts they are a "dart" with a round steel tip and sting like heck
they leve a nasty bruise dont ask how i know

oh and they work very well on cats

Another option , check out "gardens alive" on line for their anti deer spray, works pretty well . Also check out the local dog groomer and get some dog hair to put on and around the trees/ plants deer don't like this.
The blow gun works , its quiet, very accurate with just a little practice and fun. I used one years ago the chase strays out of the yard . this used the old bead and wire darts and you just put 'em in the tube backward (bead first) and they really sting....
Or how about wax bullets in your favorite revolver?
Just get a half a dozen or so pieces of brass, open the primer hole just a little with a drill bit, paint 'em a bright color with spray paint so they never get mixed in with regular brass again. Then place a primer in the normal manor, take the case and like a cookie cutter push it through a cake of parafin wax to make a wad cutter
(no powder needed) you now have an accurate low noise, low power load that will be harmless but packs a good sting out to 10 yards or so..... these are fun practice loads for the "Parlor" too.
BTW I like the trip wire to the coyote howl, , ,

Call the DOW they might issue some rubber bullets or allow you to use them. I forgot where but I have read that a DOW issued some farmers some rubber bullets to keep the deer at bay.

The route I would use is the paintball gun and freeze the paintballs they give a nice little sting! Or just grab the boys BB gun.

Another way to go is get a couple of coyote decoys and put them in your yard or garden.
I have put a 30-06 hull on an arrow and wrapped it with cloth tape for a neighbors dog. Once in the flank and that big boy stayed out of my yard.
For non-lethal??? I've got a potato gun. Might have to bake them first.

How about a big dog ?

1 way I've heard of for keeping deer out but I've never tried
is to get a big bag of human hair from a barber shop or beauty
shop and spread some of that around your yard boundry.
Try it and let me know if it really works or if it's an old
wives tale.

Hair might work short term, but in an urban setting they seem to get used to the smell of hair or deer repelants pretty quick. I would be careful using a bow and rubber blunts. I killed a deer about 35 years ago with a 50lb recure and a rubber blunt, it was a fluke but can happen. I have also had a couple of dogs that didn't survive rubber blunts over the years. I have a motion detector sprinkler I found in a magazine and that has worked as well as anything I have tried. Seems to get the cats, dogs and deer moving when it goes off. Your best long term solution is fencing.

I know very little about paintball guns, but it does seem like a workable solution to my deer problem...actually sounds like fun too !

So if I needed something with accuracy out to about 15 to 20 yds max, what brand should I look at ?

Do they come in different calibers ?

The potato gun I used would take your calf off of your leg if the potato hit it.

BB and pellet guns are a bad idea. That's the type of thing that gives airgunning/airgunners a bad rep. I know of a federal investigation launched over a pellet being found in a deer.

It doesn't take much to penetrate the hide/wound with a pellet or BB, and cause an infection. Especially if it is any more powerful than the "red Ryder".

Maybe a large bb somehow made of salt, used in a slingshot?

Not sure exactly what you wanted to say there, but I can't be setting off m-80 fireworks in a residential neighborhood. Can't kill deer in a residential neighborhood either. That's why I'm looking for a way to scare them off...a non-lethal way to scare them off.

The Washington Dept Of Wildlife uses paintball guns on moose in Spokane. The thing that I found works the best for deer is the motion detector sprinkler, or a low electric fence wire with pieces of apple tied on, or rags soaked in deer bait. One bite, and they are gone.

Tippmann will last for ever. Accuracy is dependent on barrel bore to paintball size match.

They are generally .68, but very as much as a 8hundredths inch.

At 15-20 yards just let a burst of 3-5 go and walk on target is how it is generally done. They are not at all accurate compared with even an bad SKS.

You should be able to hit a deer at that range with a shot or two though.

I had an old timer friend who used human hair clippings from the local barber shop for years. Worked like a dream keeping deer out of his 1 acre garden. Or a life size poster of Nancy Pelosi would work:)

I think that would bring in other scavengers though. I wonder if it works for a coyote decoy though?

Thanks Jeepdude. I'll check into the Tippmans first. I shouldn't ever have to go 20 yards with a shot, more like 5 to 10 yards. So the accuracy should be fine, from what you've said.
