I NEED a scope for my wife's new rifle! Which one should I get??? Leupold or Vortex!

I just bought my wife a CZ 527 American Carbine chambered in 223 to shoot squirrels and coyotes with. She is a good shot but will prob NEVER be shooting over 300 yards. I need a scope for her gun....a couple options I was looking at was Leupold VX11 4x12x40 or a Vortex Viper in same magnification range. The Leupold is about $325 and the Viper seems to be a little more, around $400.....In this particular lineup, which scope would you choose. Ive never owned a Leupold so Im not sure of the VX11 quality other than what Ive heard. I own a Vortex Viper, and its ok. Not overly impressed with it, but it ceratinly does the job I need...so that being said, which route should I take here?? I need to make decision fast, like by tomorrow. Thanks

if you can take her to the store - i'd say give her the choice of looking through both of them (maybe at a big box outfitter?) and then she can decide which she lies better.

both company's make respectable quality scopes, and have amazing warranty coverage. I own both brands (although i have a vxI and a vxIII in the leupy line) and the glass quality when matched to price point seems about equal - at least in the sub $500 ish class scopes anyway - from what i can tell.

i have a couple 4x12x40 Vortex Diamondbacks and have hunted with one for a couple seasons now. i can tell you that the dawn/dusk low light functionality of the ones i have are amazing. I hunt back in the woods and good glass allows me to hunt that last 15-20 mins of legal shooting time that i would otherwise be unable to do with my bare eyes and still make good ID's and such. The same goes for my vxIII.

How would you compare your Diamond back to your VX111 in clarity and quality? If you had to choose 1 to hunt with, which one would you choose?

Just get her the armasight Zeus pro 640 thermal, 4x32x100 and be done with it! It's on sale too...only $10,149, and that includes FREE shipping! Remember: happy wife, happy life!....lol. All kidding aside, just put your Viper on her rifle, since your getting a new one.

Shoot, Id need to get a loan to buy that scope...lol....Maybe I should just put my Viper and put it on her new gun and buy me like a VX11 4x12? Think the 4x12 is plenty for coyote hunting out to 3-400 yards? Im no target shooter, so strictly hunting..Watcha think, Rick?

I think a 4-12 would be good. I use a 3-12 on my 222 and a 4-16 on my 223, usually end up no higher than 6x on the dial

But what works for me, may not work for you or others. I have a .204 Ruger, and have a Vortex Crossfire 3X9, ($140 scope) and had plenty of successful kills. Guess it all depends what YOU are comfortable with. If your completely undecided, go to a store which has a large variety of glass and look through them. But if you do that, pretty much guarantee that you end up spending more than you initially wanted too....lol

you never owned a leupold and been hunting coyotes for over 20 years something is not right here. Leupold are very clear scopes from vx1 all the way up the line .

I vote for the Leupold(lots to like). The VXII is a very good value.
The Classifieds here have been good for Leupolds lately, I have seen several VXIII up to VX3i go for about $325.
I think it's guys stepping up in features and glass.

Awesome!!! Ill def be watching the classifieds...Thanks

Look at the Vortex Diamondback HP, its about $80.00 to $100.00 cheaper than the Viper. The lenses and coatings are the same as the Viper. The difference between the two are the Viper is a 30mm tube and the Diamondback HP is a 1" tube.

I have a number Leupolds, several Vortex, a number of Sightron's and several Nikon Monarchs; and a group of older Burris and Weaver scopes on my rifles. Not really sure how many scopes I have, but they all shoot fine and I have too many rifles to put high end scope on all of them. I have a drawer full of cheap scopes taken off purchased rifles.

Think about how much your wife will use it. Almost all upper level scopes from the major brands are good scopes. (Admitted some are better than others, but all are usable). Let your wife look through them, if she likes one and it is in your budget - buy it. The best deal I ever got on a scope was Natchez's closeout on Nitrex 3X9 42mm scopes for $99.00. I purchased two to try them, many times I wish I had purchased 10 at that price.

I find it weird you saying you been calling coyotes for 20 years but do not know about scopes and have been asking all kinds of questions in the last few weeks.
I only been calling 11 I think .

Yes, I been asking questions about scopes, you are correct, but you don't see me asking questions on how to call coyotes. I NEVER claimed to be scope guru, but I am a predator caller, I don't Polish scopes all day. Maybe you know a lot about scopes, how much good does that do you when trying to call coyotes? Do they come in better when you stroke your Leupold? For me, I've killed more dogs with a Nikon Buckmaster than most will ever kill with a NF or any Bender Fender scope you like. I kill coyotes, I don't stroke scopes all day...big difference bro.

Easy to say, keyboard commando....Like I told the other moron, I kill my FAIR share....I would say, I'll see you at the world hunt in AZ in Dec., but O wait, that's invitation only and you won't be there, but I will! I kill coyotes...I don't stroke keys all day studying about scopes. Good day fellas.
