Jack Roberts, vegetable wads are the term used for the type of material. Believe that they are like old style shotgun wads just much thinner. I got mine from Walter's Wads, think Cabela's carries them or Natchez. Walter, however, will send you a sample quantity and I think a Google search will bring him up as well.
I send him a nominal $ to cover his costs even though he doesn't ask for it. I just use a dowel or a similar sized implement to seat them in the case and these things really do pattern quite decently. In the case of the .458, I got a pretty, circular pattern with good density and with the ball centered at about 10'.
Just checked the .500 loads. The ball weighed 182gr and there was approx. (shot weight varied by operator consistency) 200 +/- gr of shot. About like a common 20 ga. field load. Will see how the .500 patterns and how the round ball penetrates on Tuesday.
I just enjoy doing some things the factories don't and am pleased when I succeed. Don
