I sure do miss the "old days".
When I went to get in my p/u this morning, I noticed that I had a horse-shoe nail in my driver's rear tire.....AND, a screw in my passenger's front.

Amazingly, neither was flat, thank goodness.

So I went to a tire dealer/repair shop to get them fixed.
The bill wound up being within a few cents of $45!!!

Sign of the times, I know.
But, I can remember being able to get 2 tires repaired for a total of $15!!!

Will, don't feel bad,.,I can remember when I had a flat, or most other minor vehicle problems and could go to the local DX station where we did business and if the racks weren't busy, I could fix the problem myself and just pay for supplies..

I don't remember it that low but I remember 1.22/gallon during
gas wars.

To this day, I don't think I've ever paid more the $10 to get
a tire patched.

About 20 years ago I was going down the road following a truck.
The truck hit a bump and a big box of screws flew out of it and
scattered all over the road. I hit those screws with all 4 tires.
All 4 went flat and fast. All 4 had more then 1 screw in them.
I was lucky as this happened right in front of the tire store
I had been using for years. They thought it was funny as [beeep]
and only charged me to fix 2 of the tires.

He-he,
When I first got my license, "regular" gas was a whole .83 cents per gallon.

Seven years later, while working @ a gas station, I can remember having a "gas war" with the station across the street.
We were selling gas for .62 cents, & cars were lined up so far back around the intersection we were on, that the police came & made us end the "war", after about 10 days.

I typoed in my first statement.
When I started driving gas was around .30 a gallon and during
gas wars it was .22 a gallon. I could fill my car for $2.00

can get a tired fixxed here for 2 of them for about 20 bucks which is still high ... i was telling my sons back when they where born in the lates ninetys gas here was 85cents a gallon now im paying almost 4 bucks !! im not old but do miss the 80's and 90's !!!

Lowest price I recall for regular gasoline was $0.19. Just filled up @3.62 @ Sam's this morning.

We can still get a tire repaired for $4 due to many small independant tire shops in the area.

Regards,
hm

.24C a gallon when I started driving; a plymouth convertable 6 banger. 30 some miles to the gallon stick shift. $1.00 every two weeks for gas. Longgg way from there now.

Good,I thought I was oldest but the best I can do was .30 a gallon.I can remember a coke and candy bar for a dime though but that was when I was still traveling by peddle power. My first car was a 67 bug.It would not hold but about 4.00 bone dry.Gas pretty much reflects in the cost of everything and there is just no reason gas should be so high.I have heard all the propaganda but I still say there is no good reason for gas to be so high.
One story for high gas is fear the Strait might get closed and the next day I hear we are exporting oil from the US to China.

Will, you should consider just getting a plug kit I think they are less than $10 and easy to use. I have used a plugged tire for a long time.
I think gas was around $ 1.40 - $ 1.50 when I started driving in the early `80s maybe less.
The wife has taken a liking to my new (to us) truck and commented it seems to get good mileage....untill she went to fill that 30 gal. tank...she was used to her toyotas 15 gal tank..lol

I can remember when gas was around $.32-.$35 cents a gallon....and it was the good 92-94 Octane....not this Junk Gas we pay high-dollar for either.

When You bought a soda it was around $.05-$.10 a bottle and You could beat a Dog with a Baby Ruth Candy Bar or a Butter Finger candy Bar...now there so small You'd have to chase a Mouse with it!

Now a Days when a Car or Truck cost more than a large House back in the 1960's there's just something not right about that in a nut shell?

Ok......I feel much better now!

You always have to consider inflation.
That is, how much the government had devalued the dollar over the years.
A dollar today is worth less than 1% of what it was worth a 100 years ago.

Jack

I pumped a lot of gas for Mary Hudson back in the '50s at $0.139 and could fill an empty Cadillac for less than $5, using premium (3 cents more)...

I bought the last gas in KCMO for $0.439 in 1973, as the station was getting ready to close and he held the doors open for me before raising the price to $0.489 at the time of the oil embargo and the 55mph speed limit was going into effect..

Jack is pretty close to correct about inflation...Back in the '50s, a $20 bill was like having a $100 bill in your pocket now...

Yeah I remember those days also, you have to remember that the minimum wage back then was around fifty cents an hour.

I commented I could remember when a coke and candy bar was a dime, and I can,but I should also add that most of the time I did not have a dime.We were pretty poor. But at the time I did not know it and was pretty happy.Few of the others had a dime either.

Actually, if I had a garage, & a "tire tool", that exactly what I would have done.
(or if my dad lived closer, I'd have went to his place.)
Dad has an old manual tire changer that we used for years, fixing our own tires on the farm.
Oh, and they did put a plug in the rear tire, as it's a Super Swamper.

As far as the gas pricing....like I stated above, that price was when I started driving.
But, I remember it back at aournd .30 cents...and candy for .05 cents...when I was a kid.
My grandparents owned/operated a full service station & repair garage from the late '40s to the early '70s. (The station was actually built as an expansion to their house. They had pumps...1 "Ethyl"; 1 "Regular Lead"; 1 "Premium".)

When I started driving gas was about 25 cents a gallon and down to 12 cents when there was a gas war. Payphone, chips, pop, candy bar,all were 5 cents. draft beer was 10 cents a glass and a bottle of whiskey was $3.50.

Green Giant corn on the cob at the packing plant was 6 dozen for a buck. Coffee and donut was 10 cents.

Movie prices were 12 cents for kids and 25 cents for adults. 2 movies and a cartoon or six.
smile.gif
and Sat matinee also included a serial.

Worms or live minnows for fishing were 25 cents a dozen. Boat rental was 3 bucks for the day no motor.

We amused ourselves putting out grass fires and having rock fights.

Ball point pens were a new concept when I was in school. We weren't allowed to use them. They leaked like crazy. When I started using ink it was pen with a nib, a blotter and an ink well. After a couple years we were allowed fountain pens. They leaked too.

I didn't know one kid with Asthma, peanut allergy, ADHD or a cell phone.
