I sure miss the" old days"

I remember the good old gas war days as well, although that was a wee bit before my driving time. Remember the green stamp days, and glasses, and dishes. And, that was all on top of it being full service!!

Remember the dime for a soda and a candy bar, and let's not forget that you got 3 cent back for the bottle!

No cell phones, in fact not everyone had phones. We were lucky to get on a party line when we moved out here in the sticks.

2 channels on TV, one was snowy all the time, the other was the public TV. Didn't matter much because it all looked about the same on the old black & white.

Corporal punishment wasn't done away with in school, and if the folks heard you got paddled at school, you got paddled again when you got home!
 
Rocky you made me think of something I had not remembered for a long time and made me laugh .We had an old black and white Motorola TV and as you probably remember they had tubes which did not last long sometimes. Our TV would go out and Dad did not much care,and money was short so it would be months before it got fixed.The guy who would come to fix it was probably 6'2" and really slim.Dad called him pencil a**.As a boy that was the funniest thing I ever heard.
 
i remember that dad would take the tubes out of the tv and test them at the market. you could buy them there and fix your tv. wash rags ( clothes) and towels in laundry powder.

Will, I fixed more tires at $8.50 a pop than most folks have seen in their lives. Corner of Crawford and Ohio, the old East Crawford Amoco. Worked for Tripplet Co. under Rob Little and then Gene Bengston.

.85 cents a gallon when I first started driving. $3.65 minimum wage sacking groceries. We would get a dime for glass "sody" bottles. We would climb to the top of tall pines just for fun. When was the last time you seen a kid climb a tree? No pools for us, we would swim in snake infested ponds, swamps, and lakes. Most households I knew only had one car in the drive. Rotary phones. I have been to houses that had dirt floors. Bars with dirt floors. Bars that would knowingly serve minors. Been in a whore house. Walked a many of miles, including 5 miles to school if I missed the bus. Got into fights while both parents watched. And fighting was not a felony back then. Got paddled at school. Had the fat pencil cracked over my knuckles more than once from the teacher in front of the class. The yard stick applied to me from the teacher. Had to wear the type of hearing aid that would drape around your neck, that was embarrassing. Got a school picture of me with a butter fly collar shirt on. The first president that I can remember was Jimmy Carter. Yep, I miss the old days.

Back when we were having those gas wars in the mid-80's, the place I worked at was acroos the intersection...at the old Coastal Mart.
Then right before that Amoc closed, in the mid-90's, I believe it was, I worked as a cashier at that Amoco.

Where the Amoco was, now stands a McDonalds...and the C-Mart went out of business, then was bought by the guy who had been the manager there. He owns it & 3 other stations around town.
 
picking up soda bottles as a kid, you could get $.02 for a regular bottle and a nickle (I think) for the large one. Gas was about $.41 a gallon here back around '70 too.
