like what size fott trap i use on coyote and whats the most effective lure??? and lastly how do i set up the foot trap! how many should i buy if i own over 200 acres worth of call shy coyotes?

thanks gentleman!

I'd subscribe to Fur-Fish-Game magazine & start with coons & maybe some water trapping if it's available. I do agree trapping can be more effective than predator calling but it takes a little learning to do it well.

Among the very best traps for coyote would be the MB-650, though others would work fine too. In most country all you need is a 2 prong drag on an 8 foot chain. The catch usually does not go far. If needed most hunting dogs can help to locate the catch.

O.K., time to get that FFG magazine!

The 'catch' is the critter you caught in the trap. With some trapping a particular "set" can catch a handful of potential critters. Your coon set may catch a possom, skunk or other scavenging type critter. A 'predator' set can catch any number of animals that find the lure or bait attractive. Your coyote type 'dirt hole' set can take a fox.bobcat, skunk, coon etc... Of course under some circumstances you can release a non-target animal. If it's a skunk or so it ends up as 'good riddance'. To release some you made need a pole with a choke cable or even the help of the local DNR with a tranquilizer gun. BTDT

To determine how many traps you need you will have to scout your property. The coyotes may use the whole thing or only a tiny portion. The basic premise is to set on sign. A dozen traps will be more than likely enough, especially to start. You're going to want at least a #2 coilspring. Duke makes cheap ones. I use their 1.5's for everything and they work pretty good. They are a little small for coyotes though and I don't have many around.

Generally speaking you use urine and a gland lure together or bait. You can add some urine to a bait set to add authenticity.

Find your way to trapperman.com and spend a few hours reading the archives. There is a wealth of info over there

This really is the best way. If that's not an option buy a book or 2 or search the net then feel free to ask questions for clarifacation. Those are some really open ended questions and anyone of us could type 100 page replies too.

As for what traps to use yes the MB 650 are probably the best, but also the most expensive. Since this is your first time traping and don't know if its for you I would buy a dozen or so USED Victor 1.75 or #2 traps. Duke will work and are cheeper if you look them over to make sure the condition is good. I would also highly reccomend traps with offset jaws to reduce damage to the foot particularly to no target critters. 4 coil is also optional. The larger the trap the more important that is. Really don't buy new $20 traps unless you have money to burn. A dozen new Duke #2 offset run $85 #3 if legel is $105. MBs run $205 a a dozen.
My personal Favorite land trap is the RC 550. They just fit under our size restriction and are top notch, rubber jaws are also an option.

im selling whats left of my trapping supplies. pm me if interested!

all i have left is 4 Duke 1 1/2 coilsprings( 3 are unused, new), 1 Blake&Lamb 1 1/2 single spring, 6 new unused 18" stakes, and 2 unopened bottles of sullivan scents..coyote con and deadly dinner

find a trapper in your area and run with them for a week... you'll learn more that way than in a 1000 hours of videos and books

Get lots of money cause it aint cheap to trap. and buy fully modified #2 bridgers and set corners of feilds and where roads enter a feild. You will not find a better yote trap in my opinion

...#1 check your trapping regulations because many states have a trap width restriction on footholds. that will determine what size you need. I echo what Matt B said about Bridgers. I have used MB550's and Bridgers but I can nightlatch the Bridgers to my liking...more on that later....but they are reasonable and very reliable. IF you're trapping yotes, I use a #2 Bridger offset, 4 coil. with 4 springs on it. They are built strong, have a welded chain and two inline swivels....just received 6 more new ones the other day...look for tracks and scat....go online to youtube and you can view videos of how to make a dirthole, flat and scent pole sets...I attach a j-hook to the end of the swivel, add a Paws shock spring to that and use a quick link to hook the other end of the shock spring to a 15" duckbill cable stake.....I used to use rebar, but no more. the hooks crimp easily with a big pair of vise grips.
