Idaho hunting?

I have a buddy that lives in Idaho, not sure of the exact location, but near the middle of the state. He bought a cs24 a couple of years ago on my recommendation. He has never had any success. I have the same caller and live in n.e. n.carolia and have had good success with the call. I have been to n.e. montana once, and called in two on three sets. I have told him everything that I know to do. He talks like there is wide open space, with rolling hills there, elk, mule deer, wolf and cougars also around. Does this type of terrain require a different set up? Any help would be appreciated, he is getting discouraged, and I feel bad for talking the cs24 up. He had an alpha dog that he had bought, and I told him to get the cs24 and never look back. He has killed several coyotes deer hunting in the area,

Hard to comment without knowing his methods and terrain. But if there are wolves in the area, that's a bad sign for the coyotes.

The CS24 works fine. I hunt the same type terrain with the exact same critters successfully.
Have only used this caller about three times but have had coyotes nearly run me over getting to it.
My favorite was a mature female coming in at a full run right past me in my truck. She threw her hind legs out as brakes skidding to a dusty stop, squatting to pee and straightening up. The whole time zeroing in and intently focused on the 24.

Tripod what volume number do you usually use. Me being from the east, I rarely go over 25 on the CS24. I usually start out around 12-15 and ramp up. Should he be using higher settings? He tells me that he usually rides a ATV to within 3-600yrds of his sets. He is wearing camo, finding a back drop, paying attention to wind, calling 30-45min. I have told him to bump up the volume as I warned him to not call to loud in the beginning. I have told him to use mostly prey sounds in summer and fall and then coyote vocals in winter. Any other suggestions?

Not just one answer here. Each sound may have a different level start and ceiling. Watching the wind may mean something different to each guy. At 3-500 yards a coyote may see or smell you before you get any chance.
I try to approach a stand wind on my face. Often I set the caller upwind up to 100 yds or so. Start the caller just so I can hear it for a bit. Some sounds this may be 15 or much more volume. Then I may change sound choice and volume which may go 40 or more in open stuff.
Prey sounds are fine into winter, they tend to lose effectiveness with many callers in the field and the onset of breeding season.
Prey sounds will almost always bring them in downwind.
I have had some very prime ones come sneaking in long after my ears are blown and after shutting down the caller.
I used an electronic caller long ago with very limited success and went back to handcalls to learn the game better. Success went up a lot. Now with personal limits I use the Foxpro for specific sets, even sitting in my truck.

Maybe....
