Identifying 5.56 ammo

A friend gave me a bag of loose rounds that belonged to his late father-in-law and I'm trying to figure out what they are.

They appear to be 5.56. Headstamp has the NATO approved crosshair and LC 97. That's it. I know the LC is laquer coat and the 97 is year made.

Any ideas on what it is? They are soft points. Neither friend nor his father-in-law reloaded.

Would like to know manufacturer and bullet weight.

Thanks for any assistance.....

Are you sure the "LC" isn't for Lake City and the year, 1997??

I've run across a website in the past that had identification of most of the military brass by country and the relative markings...

You might do a search for it..

Could be Lake City.

I've tried a google search for identifying .223 ammo and several other variations. Couldn't come up with anything right off so I took the lazy way. Figured someone might know.

I'll keep searching and will post a link if I find one.

I'm wondering if this might not be some 'remanufactured' ammo similar to what Black Hills turns out...

Their 'new' ammo all carries a "Black Hills" head stamp, but their remanufactured ammo can have any brand of cases.

You can always pull a bullet for weighing and it might give you a clue to the powder that was used..at least by type and weight of the charge..

That was the website I was referring to earlier.. I've got it bookmarked now.. Thanks..

Winchester puts out a 64gr SP bullet that is great and Hornady has several. I have some Hornady Super Explosive in the 50gr and 55gr weights (the velocity just has to be kept below 3300 fps..)
