Illinois night hunting?

I called Illinois DNR to ask this question specifically. I called the Alton office and was told that you are only allowed to LEGALLY kill a coyote this weekend if you have an unfilled deer permit.

I guess that means coyotes are fair game to the deer hunters, but the coyote hunters should take the weekend off.

I did not see where the IDNR's website said anything about the late season restriction. You might be a pretty easy target for a game warden if you're running around during deer season in full camo carrying a rifle.

On page 25 of the Digest it says:
"Coyote hunters must wear 400 sq-in of solid blaze orange when hunting in a county when there is any firearm deer season in progress including youth seasons, muzzleloader only season, late winter season and CWD season"

No where, that I can find, does it say you can't hunt coyotes this weekend. I do not see how you could get into any type of trouble since its not listed in the regs.

Clear as mud if you ask me. Page 2 under season limits and dates it says nothing about coyote season being closed during either the seperate muzzloader season or late antlerless season strictly the shotgun season dates. However on page 25 it says the following:
"Coyotes may be hunted on private
property using dogs, archery devices,
any type and caliber of
handgun, any type of legal
rifle including large capacity
semi-automatic rifles,
and shotguns using any type
of shell except for slugs (note... there
are exceptions for slugs during the
firearm deer seasons when coyote
hunting is closed except to deer
hunters with unfilled firearm deer
permits in their possession)."

It's all how do you interpret the phrase "firearm deer season". Notice there is no "s" on the word "season". Both the seperate muzzloader season & this weekend late winter season are definitely with "firearm", yet why isn't it listed on page 2 if it's closed! A crock and walking a fine line if you ask me. If coyote season is indeed closed this weekend it should be clearly listed as such on Page 2. I hunt in a county that has no late winter deer season so I "should" per page 2 of the regs be able to hunt coyotes 24hrs this weekend without blaze orange. Will I chance it? Probably not, knowing my luck I'll get a warden who interprets it differently. No offense to CO's but I've run into a few doosies the last couple of years and it's items like this that get you in a pickle because they are interpreting it differently than you. Gonna lose this argument in the field if he's convinced otherwise. Not worth a possible stiff ticket, loss of you gun and court cost to fight it if you ask me. You'd probably win in a court of law, IMO. Guess I'll take the weekend off unless I am convinced otherwise.

1/16/09 Update 1:50pm
Guys,
I just got off the phone with an officer @ the main Springfield office. Per the gentleman I spoke with (Officer Sherman) it IS legal to hunt coyotes this weekend. If you are in a county that has late winter deer season going on you must wear blaze orange. Made my day. Good luck all, gonna be a good weekend...

3:55 just got off the phone with the Benton DNR office. The Conservation Officer there confirmed V-Max's post. He says you can hunt, but are supposed to be wearing blaze orange.

I'll tell ya what the problem is, no one ever knows the answers from our DNR. They are also quick to come up with what ever that person feels like telling you at the time. Illinois is just so screwed up its crazy. I live by the Kaskaskia River and asked what areas were OK to use the 17hmr on the state land. The main guy in charge of the area seemed like he didnt have a clue what the [beeep] I was even talking about. I had a CP run me down on my field road on my property while I was going back to the clubhouse on my four wheeler and pull me over. Now I can see that but he just grabbed my gun out of the case and was trying to see if it was loaded. He couldnt figure out how to check the gun. IT WAS A SINGLE SHOT H&R 20 GA. He fumbled around long enough till he had the hammer cocked and finally got it back and I had to show him how to push the ONLY button on this gun to make sure it was unloaded. [beeep]
That will give you an idea why no one in the state knows what the [beeep] is going on.
I feel better now, thanks.

The DNR site didnt say anything about centerfire caliber restrictions so I assume that I can use whatever I want. Is that correct.

If you're on public land there can be restrictions. We have two large public areas in our county and on one you are not allowed to hunt coyotes. You can hunt coyotes on the other land, but you have to use a shotgun.

Our state is in the middle of a serious budget shortfall. I doubt the CP will be writing too many warning tickets.

One thing is for sure, and freeburg said it first, Illinois regs are screwed up! So much that I stopped sending for turkey tags because of the 5 season rule they got going! I will hunt another state before I hunt Illinois again!
