I'm going to get a 10-22. What would you do first to a stock 10-22?

buy a cz or savage bolt gun and throw that 10-22 in the trash.

Might try a T/C R55

the 10/22 can possibly drive tacks but with all time money and tinkering it certainly is no value. If you enjoy fooling around with your gun it can be alot of fun. I'd just sell my 10/22 but since i'd take a loss might aswell build it into something accurate and intersting, maybe for the wife. I like that i can get any part so easily so i have no problem working on it myself bedding, trigger job, etc. Good luck

Volqartsen hammer kit, Tuffer buffer, 1.25" Uncle Mikes swivels, M1 Garand loop sling and get to an Appleseed to learn to shoot it. Most fun you can have with a 10/22 plus all you learn will tranfer over to your other rifles so you can leave the bipod and sticks at home when you go hunting.
Shooting is not a hardware issue it is a software issue. Save your cash and buy ammo to practice with. I don't care how long you have been shooting, everyone will learn valuable info at am Appleseed shoot.
