I have a question for you seasoned pro's. I'm shooting 87 grain vlds and going to start loading 87gr vmax soon and was wondering should I be using imr 4350 or keep using the imr 4831? The 4831 works great with the vld but it seems everybody is using 4350. Should I be using it also? This is for a 243 with 24" barell. Thanks for any help.

I have been running imr4831 in my 243 with 70gr NBT. It gave me better groups than with the 4064 that everyone else likes to run. Don't get me wrong if I run out of 4831 I will be using 4064 bucause they were just slightly not as good as 4831. If you have the powder give it a try. If they don't group then try another powder.

if you are happy with what you are using now, why change?

I mean, I personally just can't leave some things alone, so I would give it a shot... but i often end up wishing i would of just left it alone and moved on to other things... lol

I have not had good luck IMR4350.

I have reloaded for 6 243 rifles and one 6mm over the years and not had one that did not perform great with IMR 4350 using 70 to 100 grain bullets. I will add that I have also had good luck with the 4831. 4350 is the most used powder on my bench I have found it covers a lot of ground for me 270's, 06, 7X57, 243, even my 220 swift really likes this stuff. Trying different powders gives a good excuse to be by the reloader which I always enjoy. You do end up with a variety of partial cans of powder over the years though.
Good luck & have fun,
Tuco
