IMR 4895 powder question

I was about to get some more powder to experiment with my loads for my 243.

And I was wondering what you guys thought of this powder.

I was reading in my Nosler book and It looks like you can use that powder in a varity of calibers, but good is it for the 243?

right now I'm using Varget and nosler 70 grain BT, and so far so good with that, But I was wanting to try some 85 grain BTHP Serria bullets this time to see if my rifle like them better.

Mark I just posted below where I shot my first loads with the 85grBTHP in my 243. I was using 35gr of BLC2 and shot 1in. group at 135 yards off shooting stix.

4895 was developed during the early 1900's and was the chosen powder for the 30-06 round for the Garand rifle. It is one of the most universal of all powders made. I would use it in a 243 in a new york minute, and do.

I use 4895 in my 308 loads and have used it in my 22-250 but haven't tried it in the 243. The best and most accurate powder for the 243 is IMR 4064. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mark,
I used to use IMR 4895 in the 243 with Sierra 85 grain BTHP's for years. It did pretty well in my pre-64, M70 Featherweight. That rifle, and the rest of the pre-64's are nestled toward the back of one of the safes now. I still love those rifles, they're my favorites. But, I've got a slew of 700's that I don't mind beating up so much, so I use 'em. The current 700 in 243 really prefers IMR 4064 and 4350. I also get a little more speed out of the slower powders with equal, or less, pressure. There's no flies on 4895, IMR or Hodgdon. Try it, it may work well for you.

I find 4895 my best powder for the 243 and 243AI. Mine are 22 and 24 inch barrels, for longer barrels there may be a better powder choice. Tried 2 pounds of Varget and couldn't get it to shoot, the last 1/2 lb made good fireworks! I use IMR4320 in my 6/284 with a 26" barrel but that powder won't shoot in my 243s.

I've used IMR4895 for .308 loads. I didn't like the way it dispensed through my powder measure, you can feel the "crunch" as you rotate the cylinder, and I don't think that leads to an accurate drop weight. I had good luck with it if I measured each load with a trickler, but that's time-consuming if you load a lot of rounds. I switched to W748 since it dispenses much more consistently. I also like H335 for the same reasons, plus it's deadly accurate in my .223.

I've had success with IMR 4064 and Varget for the lighter bullets and IMR 4350 for the 100 grain ones. I've heard that IMR 3031 is also good for the lighter bullets but I haven't tried it yet.

I use IMR4895 in my 220 Swift,243,25-06,and 270.Works good for me.It will hang up and crunch in powder measurer as Evil Lurker said.It keeps me from having to worry about several powder types for every caliber.Shoots as good a group as I am capable of shooting.

GC, just curious but how come you feel that way about 4895?Have you had bad exper. or just don't feel its a good 243 powder?I am just wondering, thanks.

Interesting thread. I just picked up some IMR 4895 for my .22-250 (new to me). I did so because I can also use it for my .270. Did I make a bad choice?

Honestly, what does it do that other powders don't do better for the .243 and middle weight to heavy weight bullets?

I don't own a 22-250, but a couple friends swear by 4064 for the Varminter. As far as your 270, unless you intend to shoot really mild, by comparison, loads in your 270, I think you'd be much better off with some of the slower burning old standby's for the 270, like 4350, 4831(Hodgdon or IMR), or RL 22. Just my .02 worth.

F1,
Thanks. I have been using 4831 in the .270 (for maybe 45 years?). I will stick with that. I guess I will use the 4895 in the .22-250 and see how it goes. It wll take awhile to use that can of powder.

You're going to like the IMR 4895. A few years ago I was looking for a new 22-250 load H380 worked fair but I really couldn't get the velocity I wanted. Started looking around and in the Nosler Number 4 manual 4895 was listed as the most accurate powder tested. Gave it a try and sure enough my 22-250 thrives on it.

Jay,
Thanks for the encouragement /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. I am looking forward to loading up a few rounds. I would like to go to the range but we are getting alot of snow so I will have to wait a few days /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Supposed to be 15 below by Thursday. That will make the coyotes hungry /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif.
