Inexpensive 22 hornet, just for plinking, short range hunting

Look for an older Stevens 340 series, make it new.

Cheap, new and 22H just don't go together that I've found.

Look at Zastava 85 made in Serbia. They seem well made, lacking some finish but that can be done easily. They are the same rifle as the Remington 799.

I'd like to find a new 22 Hornet though...cheap.

Hoping and wishing is about all you’re goning to find. Cheap, New and the 22 Hornet are not synonymous. Under $500 is a real stretch

You will need to find a decent, used rifle, that will likely need some TLC or work in general.

I had an NEF and couldn't get it to shoot decent groups under 1.5". A friend said he could get it to shoot, so I sold it to him. Would not buy another.

I'd get a used CZ527.

I'd buy a NEF or a Rossi single shot if I run across one. I'm even contemplating buying a 17 Hornet. Savage has them for around $450 new.

NEF maybe, Rossi...no thanks. The Savage in 17 Hornet is a pretty good little rifle. I sold mine to a friend and he loves it.

I have several Rossi’s, mostly rimfires.
I have one in .223, it’s a finicky SOB, but with the right load, it’ll shoot great. If I didn’t reload, I wouldn’t still own it.

How did the 17 Hornet do, did you do much hunting with it?

That is the one I would get. Or just load 10.5 of Bluedot in a 223 case with a 40grn Vmax.

For a lot of reasons, I got out of the Hornet and AI business. The Blue Dot load above in the 223 is the only way to go. Never an issue with Mag length, good brass available, can have multiple loads if you like with 12 and 14.3g in my rifle with a 14.6g being an absolute max load...weigh every charge.

in my rifle:
10g = 2800 with the 40g
12g = 3000
14.3g = 3200

having options is a good thing.

Remember with blue dot, weigh every charge as the large flakes bridge in the powder measure giving light and heavy charges.

When using a .223 for our local ground squirrels a couple of us have found that 12 grains of Blue Dot and a 40 grain Vmax are superb for 250 yard and less squirrel annihilation. Very accurate, great tosses, easy on brass, fairly quiet and you get 11 or so 50 round boxes of ammo out of one lb of powder. Pretty cool.
