Comapny might be moving me out there soon and was curious as to how hard it is to obtain a CCW there, specifically, Cedar Rapids and its county. Az is a shall issue stae and if you meet the requirements you get the permit. I'v eread i n Iowas its up to the sherriff even if you meet the requirements. any insight or info is appreciated, specifically on where you can and cant carry with and without a permit and how difficult it is to receive a permit. TIA.

my buddy just told me tonight i need to get mine cause they're gunna start buckle'n down on it, how he knows i have no clue, but for now i've heard it's way easy. i personaly dont need one so it's no big thing to me.

Hey warpig, you are moving the wrong way!

Remember the old saying, "Go west young man, and grow with the country". Often incorrectly credited to Horace Greeley but still true.

Thanks for the help. I feel for you Iowans, may issue is a joke. Made even worse by the fact that each individual county has there own set of "rules" that arent standardized by the state. So long to my suppressors as well it looks like.

I cant't speak for Linn county, but in Allamakee it isn't to bad. You will have to get a permit to take the class from your sheriff, then you will most likely be directed to Hawkeye community college in Waterloo. They give the class a few times a year. After some classroom and a little range time you'll have it.

Some of the local gun clubs hire in someone to do classes also. So keep your eye open for them. I know the Sheriff's department does a class once a year here in conjunction with the local gun club.

I just find it absurd that even after they give the permit they can still put trestrictions for hunting/target use only etc. Guess I better buddy up to the Sheriff if its his sole discretion. Anyone know how difficult it is to just get a non resident permit and backdoor the Sheriff route? For a year anyways.

Believe me, its not up to me. I love my job and my company or i would never consider leaving this sate. Az is about to pass a conceald carry law that allows CC without a permit. While I'm all for more relaxed gun laws in regards to being able to carry, I have a slight amount of concern over this one. We have open carry here so its really not that big of a deal though.

They voted in gay marriage there too... I wouldn't have ever thought Iowa would be as liberal as it apparently is.

You may own suppressors in Iowa if you have a class 3 license.

Me either. Figures of all the states to move to.

Iowa tries to live up to the goals of Illinois and Wisconsin (namely Madison). Sucks living here and the politics are very messed up. Soon as the kids are grown I'm outta here. Personally, I'd quit my job if they wanted to transfer me to Iowa. Hunting is also a whole different ballgame than Arizona so prepare yourself.

As for CC, I live in Story County and CC is very tight. It has made some improvement but you still "need" a reason or the Sheriff will deny.

Good Luck,
CB

I havent managed to make it through all the hunting regs yet. If its anything like the CCW laws I may very well vomit and turn town down a huge promotion and raise.

The marriage thing is all thanks to our great governor who won't be in office after the election. And as far as the ccw good luck. Been trying to get one for a couple of years. There are counties that it is pretty easy to get one but others it is not. I should have got mine many years ago when I live in one of the good counties.

Anybody in Linn county have firsthand experience? Year round coyotes i good, we have that here as well. Are your big game tags over the counter or on a draw system?

From what I've read they are valid for the entire state. That was the funny part to me, why not just have the state isuue the permits? Its too bad for someone in a very restrictive county who may live on the border of less restrictive one. I cant for the life of me figure out why they have 99 counties?
