Iowa hunters

I live in SW Iowa, Atlantic area, and have been out a couple times but not really serious yet. Seen nothing. I will be calling in eastern Colorado in the first half of Dec. on the return side of a business trip. Meeting a friend out there.
 
Been out a couple of times. Seen a bedded black coyote, on a picked bean. Coyote busted me before I crested the last hilltop. Don't know whether it was this yrs pup[I suspect it was], or a nomad. I'll be looking for him again.
 
As soon as deer season is over, I will be out there, unless I tag out before I think I am. Having a deer season from [beeep].
 
I've been out a couple times for yotes/fox. Haven't seen a thing. A cold/cough/flu keep me sideline for a couples week at the begining of season but I'm getting back in the swing of things. Have got some coons though and went out for a couple hours this afternoon. Didn't see anything but it was a much a scouting trip as anything.

Tony Tebbe and I have been out a few time spotted a few but the crops that are still in makes it alittle difficult. between all the equipment in the in the fields still and all the other hunting seasons that are open makes it a challange
 
My brother-in-law and I have made three stands so far this year. One stand two weekends ago and two yesterday. Called in a nice female yesterday on the first stand and put some fur in the truck! We live in southwest Iowa and crops are finally coming out. Had good harvest weather the last two weeks. I'd say that about 80% of the crop is out around here now. Coyote calling should start getting a lot better, or at least hoping it does anyway. I'm going to post a story and pictures of the hunt when I get a little more time. Called in the female with a TT cyinide mini call that I had just recieved in the mail Saturday. First trip out with the new call was successful.
 
Just back from Iowa 2 weeks ago. Was out there pheasant hunting (Dickinson County). Called for coyotes one night and saw nothing. Driving downt he road though we saw 3 out in a field.
 
After shotgun deer season. Some places will even be a tougher go[as for calling]. As the coyotes find non-recovered deer. Plenty of them, I might add. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

90%[est] of the time, "on any given daytime". The coyote's are either in cover, on the edge of cover. Or working their way towards cover. Early am, is a good time, to note this.

The ones I seen bedded out in the open every yr. Are the ones, that for whatever reason. Decided to rest/nap, before getting back to their cover comfort area. Vast majority of the time[the other 10%]. I see them bedded on the open hills. On or near the center of a mile section[the so-called, comfort area].
 
Lawton area here. Two Saturdays with only 3 sets each and one dog missed. Just got back from a 3 day weekend south of here and called 2 bobcats and one coyote. Cats got a pass due to our too short season, and the coyote ain't going anywhere. He was about 1/4 manged out. Bummer deal, cause it took all weekend and about 20 sets to get one in. Nice country too. At least we didn't get completely skunked.
 
I'm a former Iowan, have been gone since 2001. What is the deal with Bobcats in Iowa? Now there is hunting season? I lived around the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area, plus owned a 320 on the Upper Iowa between Decorah and Waukon (sold it last year). Back in 'the day', I knew there were a few bobcats up in NE Iowa, but now apparently there are enough around the entire State to allow a hunting season. How did this all come to be?

ps - Now I live on a ranchero outside of Cody, Wyoming. We've got bobcats right behind my house, plus lions and an occasional grey wolf. I keep hearing that mountain lions are being seen in Iowa, especially around Olwein
 
Circa; 1962?, My two older Bro's, myself & two of my Uncle's, were hunting cottintail. We found a dead bobcat, up in the Montour, Iowa dump area. Bobcat had a couple bullet holes in him. Montour, is located in Tama County[central Iowa].
 
The bobcats have made a place for themselves in Southern Iowa. Over the past ten years or so and so many were "incidental" catches by trappers , they put a short season on them the last couple of years. Hunting is restricted to the bottom two tears of counties and this year extended up the west side a few counties. This year , the take was extended to 200 animals from 100 or 150 last year. Everyone has to call in their cat (one per hunter per season) to the DNR and when they hit the quota , the season shuts off. You have to watch online or call in to keep tabs on the current take number. This is for hunting and trapping . It hasn't taken long each year to hit the mark so you have to be quick. I live almost 200 miles from the area so haven't had a chance to try. We have an otter season too that works the same way and has been upgraded to 500 animals this year. I have hunted deer for years in SW Iowa, spending countless hours on the stands, and saw my first ever Bobcat last Sunday morning. I was watching a doe, thinking about filling a doe tag if she kept on coming, when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I couldn't believe how big it was. I thought they were a lot smaller.

It was great, I would love to call one of them into a stand. BTW, the doe sure didn't stick around for long. She just kind of disappeared.
