Last year I had reflective markers in the field behind my house, and had lots of opportunities to look at animals at known yardages. I could identify deer out to about 500 yds., and coyotes from 375 to almost 400 yds. I would say that when you get out that far, the magnification is more of an issue than the amount of light.
The 940nm will be almost invisible at the source, but won't light nearly as far. I don't have one but that is what everyone says about them.
