Is 200 yards stretching night vision ?????

We are new at this. The cow is about 300 yards from my house. We have been walking up and around a shed with no cover. Other than the cover of darkness. So it fits the lay of the land. I figured any closer and they will hear and see us walking to the old car to rest on.
So far in about a week we have had around 25-30 coyotes at it, and we have been shooting at them too!
 
Update.

I think we are on the right track. We took the 22 250 out and my 13 year old punched a nice 15/16” group at 200 with it. The 223 seemed to shoot the 55 gr Nosler BT’s a little better but still not what it used to do.
So we put the ATN on the 22-250. Started at 30 yards and worked it back to 200 in the dark. It is looking like it is gonna keep em under a 2” group.

Now why is my 223 gone to crap? I used to use PMC brass and shoot the 55 gr Nosler BTs into almost one hole. 3/8” was near 100%. Only thing that has changed is these were in Winchester brass. Gonna have to do some digging. It should not go from 1” groups at 200 yards to 4”-6” groups at 200.

It may also be time to look at the throat. Check the crown as well, maybe a ding some where along the journey.
On another note, man is that a lot of coyotes on one cow!!!! That's great! Saty ay it.
 
I forgot to mention, you may need to select a reticle type that is easier to make sure the rifle is not tilted. A right tilt will result in a high shot, left tilt low shot. A floating dot, or a circle/dot can result in the rifle being held different. The longer the shot the more "error" resulting from tilting the rifle.
 

I would’t know how to act with that many coyotes hitting the bait. Mine generally trickle in one at a time, with a good amount of time inbetween each visit.

Hope the 22-250 solves the problem. Looking forward to some photos of coyotes on the ground.

That’s where I started today with it. Stripped it clear down and cleaned it from one end to the other. Took rail off and cleaned it. Blue Locktite and retorqued the base screws. Gonna she how she does now.

Yes. I hope it’s not the barrel. If it is I will be doing my first rebarrel job.
On a side note, I like your avatar. My dad was a P51 fighter pilot. He had a piper cub before I was born. They always catch my attention.

Thanks. That is a 180 hp Experimental Super Cub I built from the ground up. I flew pretty hard for about 15 yrs. I sold the cub, as they say in the aviation world, when life gets in the way. Kids in college and other priorities... Aviation can be pricey, and honestly, in todays uncertain world, kind of relieved I don't have that responsibility of feeding an airplane.

I am the 6th kid so he had to get rid of it a couple of kids before me. He flew model RC planes and had a couple of Cubs.
 
Skinny and his boys in SD do a lot of shooting over dead cattle. They make a killbox out of hay bales. They build precision long-range rifles, but I think they may set up their killbox closer to the dead cow.

Sometimes I have my bait pile at 100 and sometimes at 150, and if I have a roadkill deer at 215 but I am shooting from my office window. I am shooting a AR suppressed in 223, and it does well enough when I do my part. I killed this one last night at 173 after missing at 155 when the coyote turned just as I shot.

The 22-250 is doing awesome. My 13 year old got one opportunity Saturday night. Coyote left bait. Didn’t stop until about 330 yards. Shoulder / spine shot. DRT
10 year old got a shot tonight(30 minutes ago) at about 250. DRT. 3rd yote for the 10 year old and 2 for the 13 year old. They are about to decide this is funner than deer season.

Sounds like the .223 barrel needs an extensive evaluation.

We did a super fast sight in of it with a cheap scope out to 200.
There was a lot of wind. It was doing pretty good. Haven’t really
Checked it yet as for grouping. This scope doesn’t track well when trying to move it around.

Hope all the cleaning and retorquing everything fixed it.
Would like to add a thermal so each kid could play at the same time.
All the horror stories of POI and them breaking down. Companies going out of business etc. have made me glad I am still just looking.
 
Update. Still haven’t had time to mess with 223. Wind and weather and work.
On the other hand though we are now at 9 yotes with the 22-250. Each boy has 4 and I
Shot one. Zero misses!!! Seven of them at 200. One at 240 and my 13 year old dropped one at
328.

This is becoming a fun pastime.
