is .308 too much for Coyotes

If you want to save fur, maybe, depending on ammo. But not in general, no. It's what I use more than anything else, just cause I happen to like my Rem "police sniper" in .308, and like to set up long shots.

Most people claim I bring new meaning to the term overkill, myself...well...i guess i do hunt sometimes with extreme predjudice. I say its just fine for the job, range and takedown

just use a heavy bullet made for big game like the winchester failsafes if you want to save the fur. i posted some pics of a yote i shot with my 30 06 not much danage

theres the exit wound from the 30 06, mostly its just the blood that spilled out cause we left him over night and picked him up in the morning. he was shot at about 75yards with a 180gr softpoint

fmj will over penatrate causeing a small hole all the way thru causeing not alot of initial damage with that you get yotes that just never stop running and bleed out 2 or 3 miles away.

The .308 may not be not be the best in any one category, accuracy, speed, ect. But I feel it's about the best overall cartridge there is. Lots of bullet & brass choice, always find some on the shelf, mild recoil, and forgiving to reload for.
You can hunt anything from varmints to elk with it.

I use a heavy barrel varmit rifle in .308, 2 lb trigger, glass bedded, and some really good glass on top. I'd never hunt prairie dogs with it, but if you want reach way out and touch a groundhog or coyote, it's just the ticket. True, it has a rainbow trajectory compared to some of the .22's out there, but at extreme range it hits the same place repeatedly. And, it's bringing a load with it when it gets there. I love mine.

My advice: whichever rifle you can hit with, buy.

Doug, the 308 makes a fine coyote gun. If you can get it to shoot the Hornady TAP 110 grain ammo, you would likely never give it up for anything else.

Good call, guys. The 110's and 125's are really fast and explosive. I worked up from 110's all the way to 220, then back down. The best all around load for my particular rifle was the 168 Matchkings. Now, I've had people tell me that you can't use a target bullet to hunt with. But I've never seen a critter take a direct hit from one and do more that twitch once or twice. Anyway, the 168's are seated out pretty far, and are long anyway, and I got magazine damage on the tips. I ended up with Nosler 165 Ballistic Tips. What an awesome load!
