Is 60 lbs enough??

If you guys had to make a guesstimate what would be the minimum kinetic energy one would need to kill a deer?

Without having exact numbers I am figuring my 60 lb bow is hitting with 49 ft*lb which seems really low. Last I heard on a forum was guys arguing that 1000 ft*lb was not even enough, BUT that was rifle as well.

Those people are idiots too. It doesnt take 1000lbs of energy to kill a deer with a rifle. A lot of deer have been poached with a single .22 shot to the neck. With bow 40lbs of ke is plenty. I would shoot a small dia cut on contact broadhead. Maybe a two blade magnus. 2 blade heads penatrate deeper with low ke set ups, due to less resistance drom only having two blades. I killed my first few deer shooting a 35lb bow and 3 blade muzzys, my ke from that set up was maybe 25-30lbs of ke. Shot placment is KEY. What weight arrow are you shooting and velocity?

I am not 100% on my exact arrow weight or speed. Off the top of my head I dont even remember my exact draw length.

After going back and re-doing my calculations I believe my arrow is coming in at about 390 grains. After a quick calculator crunch my bow shooting at 60 pounds is shooting ball park 250 FPS +/- a few for minor mis calculations on arrow weight.

Do the math out and that is hitting 54 ft*lbs of energy. So Its safe to say my bow is in the 48-58 ft*lb range.

Just so I dont feel like I am taking away from the OPS thread, if you are shooting something similar your results will be close to the same.

60 will get it done.I hunt a lot of hogs here in fl.they are tough animals and my bowtech insanity set at 60 with a 425 grain arrow carrying a slicktrick puts meat on the table.

I remember back in the early 80's I was shooting my bow at 80 lbs. Went to a bow shoot and a guy there had a chronograph set up. At 80 lbs. 30" draw my arrows sizzled the chronograph at 201 fps!!!!!

Those were the days. I remember guys grinding down the backside of limbs to get higher poundage. 80+lbs with 6" overdraws. Thise days are long gone. Archery has come a long ways in the last 30yrs.

I'd take a quiet and easy pulling 60# over a noisy and hard to hold 80# anyday. Quiet kills with good shot placement and efficient blades.

Shayne

I use a 45lb Bear recurve and never had any troubles within my comfort zone.
