Is a handgun a Pistol?

Sorry if this is stupid or I am just beating around the wrong bush but am just trying to find some answers. I have read the AZGAF 2014 manual on javelina hunting and it only says handguns.

I have an AR15 Pistol, semi-auto, that I was wondering if it would be savvy to use for javelina hunting. Handgun=pistol?

Not looking for expert legal advice to which I will not hold anyone accountable, so please don't get nervous or anything.

Just looking for a ballpark yes or no to get me started in the right direction.

Sorry if using an AR for javelina hunting is a stupid idea. I havent done it yet, just exploring the idea.

I have put in for the draw. already have a pistol GP100 I can take. Practiced with it and am good. Just would like to know if an AR pistol is alright or not.

Thanks

I happened to notice this thread before I got a PM and thought I would try to answer it here.

If you can possess an AR15 pistol, you should be able to hunt javelina with it. There is no definition for "centerfire handguns" in the AZ Game and Fish laws (Title 17) or in the Commission Rules. So the same requirements that apply to hunting with your GP100 would apply to an AR15 pistol.

I also suggest contacting the AGFD to double check with them.

Dick Metcalf and J. Guthrie did a show on this very subject on this very animal and in the same state IIRC. It was legal and very effective. Can't remember what Guthrie was shooting (.223 I think), but Metcalf I remember used an AR pistol in 9mm and killed his javelina pretty handily.

Revolvers are Handguns.
Pistols are Handguns.
Revolvers are not Pistols.
Pistols are not Revolvers.

A Semiautomatic handgun is generally called a Pistol.

A revolving cylinder handgun is generally called a Revolver.
