I'm thinking about getting a hunting dog in a year or two and I really like the look of a jack russell terrier and I was wondering if these are very good dogs for hunting in barns and other tight spaces a large dog can't go?

I would say not for coyotes, but for heavy brush hunting for deer they are outstanding if trained right. I have a family friend that swears by them for deer hunting.

I have Terriers and yes they will fit the bill for you, I would get one out of hunting stock and not a pet store!!

Like vargy said, get one from working parents. Go watch the parents hunt, see if they do what you expect the parents to do. Find a hunter, not a breeder. Whether or not they have dogs for sale or breed, they will be able to point you in the right direction.

What do you plan on hunting? A good JRT is hard to find in most areas, but they are out there. There are a ton of them for sale, but from backyard peddlers that could care less about hunting them, and more about the cute little things. A good JRT will hunt barns and piles, holes, etc. Where are you located? I will see what I can do to line you up with a hunter with real working JRTs.

I bought my daughter [yea, right] a JRT about 7 months ago and that little dog's a hunting machine! But she's so small I'm afraid she'd be tore up pretty quick.

I didn't have any intentions of hunting this dog, so I just found a good "pet" litter.

She absolutely lives for catching the rabbits under the shed. When there's no rabbits moving, it's birds in the yard, once all the birds are run off, bugs and butterflies...then repeat cycle...all day long.

I'm thinking about trying to talk my daughter [yea right] into letting me take her pheasant hunting with me. She would be absolutely outstanding in the thick stuff, and rooting out the pheasants that hold close.

And believe it or not, she's got a pretty good looking point on butterflies!

I have a long haired JRT that I have used to decoy coyotes for years. I've probably killed over 200 using him. It works good in the fall and most of the winter, but I have to leave him home when it gets to late winter/early spring when they start getting a little to rough. No one ever believes me until they see him work, it's almost funny.

I use JRT's alot when I call coyotes.

I don't think coyotes mind a little dog as much as a large one.
They aint for everybody and they need to work or they will be tearing stuff up around the house.
Hope you find a good one.

yep they are awesome mousers... we stuck one down in an old deep freeze once that we were keeping grain in for the cattle... it had about a dozen rats in it when we popped the lid... it took about 2 minutes and all went quiet in the deep freeze... when we raised the lid that little dog was grinning from ear to ear... lol.. we had to hose the deep freeze out after that....

i would love to have a couple at the house but my wife had cut any new additions coming into the house for awhile... they are hunting machines..

I have a female named Holly. She has treed bear twice. Will dig to [beeep] to get a gopher and will tree squirrels. I had her bred and I have 5 beautiful pups. I am keeping 2, maybe 3 and will be using them for bear. Here they are when they were born. They will be 4 weeks Wed.

Keep an eye on those pups.

There's a pretty good chance that one or two will come up missing if Vargy sees this.

I love hunting terriers. I have A LOT of hobbies and do a bunch of things but terrier hunting is by far my favorite.

Those little dogs really can get the blood boiling.

As was said before: Make sure you get one out of hunting lines owned and bred by a hunter.

Big difference between the AKC types and the old school hunting lines.
