I always used hot drain cleaner(has to be lye based). Always be careful of fumes. Make sure you do it outside in a well ventilated area.

I use sani-flush in my hot water bath, add it before it gets real hot, it will roll boil up in the container.

I use white but you need to stop the acid action on the metal or it will rust right back up. I use baking soda.
