Is there a "general purpose" NightForce?

If you were getting ONE NightForce scope, which one would it be?
And which reticle would be best?

I'm thinking a 3.5-15x50 NXS with a NP-R1 reticle??

what rifle, use, concerns on weight.... ??

love my compact for light carry and great out to 600 - 800

3.5 and 5.5 for longer and bigger calibers.

Yes, that would be the following scope.

Jeff,

It really depends on the situation/usage.

If I was having this put on a range gun/varmint gun, It would be hard to argue a 3.5-15*50 NPR1 or 5.5-22*50. I personally like the 3.5-15, even if the mirage is a factor, you can still use your ret on 15x without being handicapped vs the 22x. Yes, you could dial down to 11x on the 22x and double the value if you wanted too.

If you're looking for an all around scope just for hunting, the 2.5-10*32 would be the giving choice. It's smaller/compact then the above and lighter.

My only complain about the NF is the whole eye piece rotates to turn up/down the power, this gets quite old when you run butler flip caps. This is on 3.5-15/5.5-22. I know the 1-4, 2.5-10*24, and the 2.5-10*32 don't do that and it's the standard power ring.

I personally prefer my hunting rigs as light as possible. 10lb + schit get quite old, esp when you have to walk a good distance. I'm also not a fan of huge 50mm scopes for hunting rifles, either. They usually require higher scope mounts which lacks good cheek weld, YMMV.

I love NF's that I currently own, but I don't see myself mounting my 3.5-15*50 on my Kimber Montana anytime soon for hunting.

Jeff the 2.5-10x32 NXS is the scope im getting, for just hunting its the scope im after.. I have had 2 of the larger Night Force scopes.. I loved them, but for me just a tad on the heavy side.. The NP R1 is kind of a busy reticule, Im going to get the NP R2 or the new Velocity reticule..

Yep, 11 ounces is quite a bit to add to a carry gun. I don't get much chance to shoot the long shots around here, so I think the 10x would be plenty too.
Kerry, I've got a couple of Zeiss scopes with the Rapid-Z reticles which are almost identical to the NF Velocity type.

The Velocity reticle with the NF turrets should have you covered for just about anything you'd want to do.
Just don't shoot too far and strain your gun barrel!

Thanks everybody for the info. I'm working on the NF fund.

HI Jeff you will not be dissapointed with the NF 2.5 to 10 by 32, it is excellent in clarity, resolution and the tracking is spot on. I have run the elevation up 40 moa and back down to zero many times and it never fails to maintain POI. The reticle i have is the Np-1, which i like, with that said i think the velocity would be a good reticle for hunting situation. Good luck ,you will not be dissapointed.

Thanks Tom!
Hopefully I'll have one in my grimy little hands by the end of the month, or shortly thereafter.

I've been swapping out some Leupolds lately for Zeiss. I hope this doesn't start something!!

SDS, please tell me that you got a shot off. Those are some nice pics. I wish I could get a scope like that. After I get my supressor, a nightforce is next.

Yeah they are!! Must be a lot of dogs down there--not quite as many as there used to be here Pueblo way. I love my 3.5-15x NXS NP-R1...on this rig--

It'll be go-to coyote rig probably this season--22-250 Sav. Super Striker/McGowen 8 twist 65 JLK Low Drag at 3235.

But if i could do it over again i'd get the 2.5-10 with their ballistic reticle instead.

I have a 2.5-10x24 NF compact that I really like. While it is a compact scope, it does general duty on a short barreled .308 that I set up as my version of an all around, practical,scout/hunt type rifle. It is hard to beat for what I use it for.

That being said, my favorite of NFs lineup is the 5.5x22. It is definitely not something I would put on a general purpose hunting bolt action, but for precision rigs, it is a top dog.
