Is there a way to lap scope rings without the lapping kit?

I have one set of rings that left a very thin impression on the scope when I removed the scope. I think the rings have a very fine edge on the backside. I was thinking of hitting them lightly with some fine sandpaper but wondering if there was a way to lap them if I don't have one of those lapping kits with the rod that slides back and forth?

Cheap, crappy scopes are generally to soft to use as a lapping rod. Quality hi-dollar optics are generally have harder tubes, and hold up to the job better without wearing plumb thru. Go ahead, prove this little factoid to yourself......grin

I discovered my wife's metal tube handled mop was a hair under 1" diameter, so I chopped off a section to use. Worked perfect. Too bad I can't remember where I put it after the last scope job...

I lapped some with 1" aluminum bar stock. The rings were aluminum, too, not sure if that would work with steel rings or not.

Probably, since the lapping compound is between them.

I made a 1/2 dozen 1" dia. lap tools when I decided to try it.
I used 1" dia. drill rod.
I still have one extra and sm. containers of lap compound.
Send me a PM if you are interested..cost of shipping.
