BULL VALLEY – While driving down Thompson Road on Wednesday morning, Robert Poyner Sr. couldn’t believe his eyes.

“At first I thought it was a couple of small deer,” he said. “And then I said, ‘Them ain’t deer; they’re two large cats.’ ”

Images fresh in his mind from when a cougar was shot and killed by police in Chicago’s Roscoe Village in April, Poyner said the two animals looked similar.

He described them as about the size of German shepherds with golden brown fur and long tails.

“My first instinct was to call 911,” Poyner said.

“I figured I’d better report it to somebody, do something to let people know that these animals were around.”

About 7 miles away in Woodstock, a woman driving on Route 14 near Doty Road on Sunday about 9 p.m. reported having to brake for an animal that looked like a cougar.

Woodstock police Sgt. Richard Johns said it was the only report that the department had received.

Bull Valley Police Chief Norbert Sauers said it wasn’t unusual for people to call in and say they had seen a cougar.

“I’ve heard people over the years say that they’ve seen something around here, but nothing confirmed,” he said. “I would have to say the chances of them seeing a coyote is closer to the truth.”

But Poyner insists that he saw a pair of cougars.

“I’ve seen deer; I’ve seen coyote,” Poyner said. “I’ve seen a lot in my 25 years in McHenry County, so I know what I was seeing. I wear glasses, but I’m not blind.”

Stacy Iwanicki, a naturalist with the Volo Bog State Natural Area, said that cougars tended to be secretive animals that stay away from people, but that they should never be approached.

Back off and give them space, she said.

“If he did see a pair, we could be looking at a future with the cats settling down, or they might just be moving through,” Iwanicki said. “Then again, it’s an unconfirmed sighting, and it’s hard to speculate until we get further evidence – a picture or footprint.”

Iwanicki said cougars could travel long distances easily.

“These cats could be in Wisconsin by tomorrow or Iowa by the weekend, depending on which direction they’re traveling,” she said.

Nice, Chicago Police kill a cougar and let criminals run free. If they had left him/her alone maybe he would have taken a bite out of their crime!

"Police shoot cougar near Chicago

The wandering Chicago cougar will wander no longer.

The Chicago Tribune confirmed that police officers shot a 150-pound cougar Monday after 6 p.m. in the Roscoe Village neighborhood on the North Side. The big cat was shot near North Hamilton Avenue and West Roscoe Street, according to Belmont District police, who said the cougar tried to attack officers when they attempted to contain the animal. That apparently prompted the shooting, which included as many as 10 gunshots according to witnesses.

The Tribune reported that:

Police cornered the cougar in the back yard of Ben Greene, 39, who lives on the 3400 block of North Hoyne. Greene said he heard a volley of gunfire shortly before 6 p.m. as he was bathing his 10-month-old son. His wife, Kate, ran upstairs screaming with their 3-year-old son, and they all took cover in a back room.

“At first I’m thinking there’s a gun battle in the street,” said Greene, who owns a trucking company.

As the shots stopped Greene heard the police yelling, “We got him! We got him!”

Police did not immediately discuss the condition of the cougar, but in a video shown on the Web site of Chicago television station WLS ABC Channel 7, officers stood around what appeared to be a dead cougar in an alley.

WBBM Newsradio 780 quoted a neighbor saying that she saw a cougar running down the street, through a neighbor’s property and into an alley where police shot several times.

Cougar sightings have been reported for the past two weeks since a big cat was first spotted in North Chicago and then Round Lake Park. On Sunday, reports shifted to Wilmette.

Wilmette police received calls from four residents on Sunday morning claiming they’d spotted an animal thought to be a cougar near a Chicago Transit Authority station.

The last cougar found in Illinois was in December of 2004 in Mercer County near New Boston. It was found already dead, apparently shot with an arrow. Another cougar was found dead after it was hit by a train in Randolph County near Chester in July of 2000. Prior to 2000, the last verified record of a cougar in Illinois was from Alexander County in 1862."

I live just south of Newton and know the sheriff and the Conservations officers well. I got the same text message and it was all a hoax. Not saying there isn't any in or around Newton, I do know a guy that lives on Newton lake that has seen a bob cat out behind his house on numerous occasions for the past several years though. Here is the link to the Newton Press-Mentor with the story on the supposed big cat:

and a link to the pics I'm sure you saw:

I wish as much as anyone that they would have found them, but unless you have the name of the person that got the cougar I won't believe they hit one.

It could be a bloodhound. The angle of the picture, the flares and the blurriness make it impossible to know for sure. I have personally seen a Mt. Lion in northern Indiana, so it wouldn't be hard to believe there is one in northern Illinois, just couldn't prove it from this picture.
