Is this stupid or is it just me?

I have been doing some research to find an airgun to take care of the little critters around my house without offending the neighborhood.

I have been looking at Gamo and Benjamin/Sheridan .177 rifles.

When I went to Gamo's sight, I clicked on one of their rifles that shows 1,600 fps, and this video came up:

I don't think shooting a 250 pound hog with a .177 air rifle is neither smart or ethical. I know that there are air rifles that are fully capable of taking a hog in much larger calibers, that's not the issue. I just think that the .177 probably should be reserved for rabbit and crow size game.

What say you?

It worked with the head shot at close rang, but I wouldn't even think about taking anything over a rabbit with it. I wonder how many times it or others were shot before they got what they were after. The hog didn't look 250 either.

Nearly as bad as hunting coyotes with a .17 HMR.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I couldn't resist...SORRY, Just shoot me! (But, not with an HMR) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Could be worse. Just kiddin'... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I've cleaned more than my share of wild pigs and that certainly is NOT a 250# pig. I do everything in my power to avoid people like that guy. I think they opened the cage right before the film started. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

It looked like the guy was sitting well back of the hog ... which, of course would make it look bigger. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What is accomplished by making more and more powerful airguns? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif The next thing that you know, in order to regulate their use, they will start making them illegal for kids to own and use. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

If you want to call yourself a hunter, why not just get yourself a real gun that will do the job efficiently and quickly instead of having to rely upon making the "perfect shot from the perfect angle". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hey, I just got an airgun myself for thinning blackbirds around my house. I tried a few springer 1000fps+ types and didn't care for them. After searching around I came across a Chinese one called a QB75, it's an improved clone of an old Crosman favorite. It runs on CO2, uses 2 of the 12g cartridges, mine is .22cal, 700fps and gets 60-75 shots before needing recharged. There is lots of tinkering and mods to be done to these. I bought mine from a guy who tunes them. It is really nice. And the guy was really good to deal with. Everything he did to mine, he describes freely on msg boards to those tinkering with them their self. Here's a link to his site:

Here is another that sells them in different degrees of tuning:

You can also buy a bulk fill adaptor to get away from the 12g CO2, I've hooked mine up to a paintball CO2 tank and a high pressure air tank with a remote line. Tons of options with these.

peace.

PS: Here's a thread with a few pics of mine, it's built really solid, barrel band is the only piece of plastic on it.

Pig absolutely looked like 250# to me. I would not go pig hunting with a .177 air rifle but I know they are very powerful.

Larger caliber air rifles have been used on African antelope with great success. The Lewis and Clark expedition 150 years ago used air rifles to kill deer sized game. Things have improved greatly so I see no reason why you should not be able to kill a large hog with 1 shot from an air rifle. If I were to do it I would opt for the .25 caliber though.

What a idiot!!!Why would someone even want to give someone the idea that it is okay to behave like that.He can do as he pleases but it does not mean it is responsible.

It's stupid.

I've put 22 cal pellets from a Benjamin completely through a possum and armadillo in the backyard (plus tons of birds and squirrels), but on a hog, that's a marginal kill shot.

Killing animals doesn't bother me, but use the right tool, do it quick, do it right.

To each thier own! I wouldn't do it myself, but there you go!

I'm sure he's sticking up for his and other hunters rights. He has to hold (to his own heart), his own ethical standard thats placed on his personal self.

We shouldn't condone each other. Thats whats immoral! Sticking together and supporting each other as a Unified team, to me, is what counts!

That doesn't even look 150 lbs to me. Notice the hog was starting to recover when he was BSing? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Change 'condone' to 'condemn', and I agree with you.
