I know where I can pick up a full blooded Jack Russell 8 wk old puppy pretty reasonable. Just wondering if they make a good decoy dog before I make my mind up. Anybody have any experience with these dogs?
I know a few guys that use them for tolling dogs. Funny thing with the Jack Russel's, they think they are 40-50 lb dogs. Lots of attitude. They don't use them for kill dogs.
I have hunted over one a few times. Was fun, when the coyote comes in and is distracted by the dog, the dog works it's way back to you, to shoot it. I can only imagine the dog thinking "Hey, Mr. Coyote, I know someting you don't know".

I have a friend who has one, and I'm serious, I've seen it kill coons, possums, cats, ect. They're tough, gritty little dogs.
Don't know much about decoying, but my jack's are super gritty. And they definitely think they are a lot bigger than they really are. I would also try to spend some time around their parents, mine are all spitting images of their parents, looks and attitude especially.
I think they would make an excellent decoy dog, provided they realized that they weren't actually the 40-50lb wonders they think they are once the chase was on. Plenty of agility, really smart and gritty.
Got a buddy who has one that he recently retired from usin him as a hog dog at 9 yo. Now he is a blood trailing dog in training. I actually have a pretty funny video I'll see if I can post. He was gritty as [beeep] on everything but smart and agile enough to live to 9 yo as a hog dog.
I been messing with Jacks for awhile. For the most part I like em. Most are tough as nails and willing to take on what’s in front of them.
Depending on the dog they can be pretty hard for their size.
When you get a handle on them “control” they will work.
The thing I like about a smaller dog is that most coyotes do not seem to respond negatively when Jacks go out and meet a coyote approaching a calling stand.
I have found this true in the area I hunt through the fall and winter. Well before the time when a decoy dog really earns their feed.
This year I am working a half Cur, half Jadg female that weighs 46 pounds. Already I can see the difference size makes in the coyotes reaction in my area. The Jack I got left is a long legged one that weights 26 pounds.
I would look hard at the parents and find a pair that have some leg under them.
They do little good if the coyote can’t see them for the grass.
I think a lot of these little dogs, and can’t see myself without at least one.
It cost just as much to feed and keep one that will never work, as one that can.
Mine is pretty small about 13 lbs. She's six now but she has been doing this a while. She's started out as another pair of eyes and maybe a nose. Now she knows whats going on. At first had to explain to her that she was a decoy not bait! Decoys get to go home..
yotsalot, thanks for clearing that decoy/bait deal up for me. Decoys get to go home. LOL. I like that, I'll have to explain it to my wife as per her Fox Terrier X Poodle.
Kelly I like your quote about killing coyotes not being chess but checkers. I will agree with that especially when we hunt leopard. Sometimes takes a bit of figuring out but a lot boils down to common sense.
My best friend growing up had a jack and boy that dog was tough. Lived on a dairy and would bite a bull on the nose if you let him. But he was stubborn as an [beeep] I tell ya. We like to say he had little dog syndrome. rp
