Jackal hunting

Hey guys
I wanna start jackal hunting and need to know a few things:
How similar is it to Coyote hunting?
Same with bobcat-caracal?
Will similar calls bring in jackal?
I know there are definetly jackal in the area because I got lots of pics on my trail cam. Will post them soon

Not sure how many people here have Jackal hunted... I know I haven't, but if you know the rules and laws I am sure it would be very much like coyote hunting.

I have never hunted Africa, but pretty much any predator will be interested in pretty much any easy meal, which is what they are looking for when they come to distressed prey sounds.

I have hunted S. Africa and called in a Jackal with a jack rabbit distress. May have been beginners luck but he came right to me about 3 minutes into the call and I now have the pelt to show for it. I only asked to kill one and the PH had no problems with my request. That was before I had a digital camera but let me see if I can get a hard copy pic scanned and posted.

mouse sounds and cottontail distress worked best for us while in botswana. Called several in but did not kill any by calling. We were on an archery only ranch. ps the action they produce is very fast and exciting

I hunted South Africa and Namibia in 2007. I got with some guys over there who are really good at night calling jackals.

Here's a short YouTube video of some of the hunt.

The guys I hunted with used a variety of sounds, Foxpro sounds, mouth calls, and some
sounds that are just African sounds, like jackal and warthog sounds. All worked well and
we took several jackals.

I hunted with Gerhard in South Africa and has I recall he used primarily rabbit and rabbit-like sounds. I also called in several in both SA and Namibia using regular ol' dying bunny blues from a mouth-blown call. I suspect they're like any other opportunistic carnivore - make a sound like some kind of food dying or getting chewed on by another critter and there's a chance they'll come check it out.

Here's a couple that Gerhard called in for me.

I was in RSA for a month. we called jackals and cats, day or night. We used Foxpro with different rabbit distress as well as hand calls. The jacals were pretty easy to call and behaved much like the coyote.

[beeep], that looks just like a house cat!

I'm trying to get a group to go to Namibia this summer. 6 Spots, $1,950 per person (flight not included) for 7 days, lodging, three meals a day, all you can shoot jackal, baboon, and caracal. We're going to have a competition between the group and the Winner gets a free guided Kudu Bull hunt ($1,800 value).

CS Clark, that's a good price.

Gerriemr, We called two African Wildcats while on the 3-day hunt, getting one of them.

They do look just like a house cat. But, they are the real deal, wild and destructive.

Your Jackal look a similar to our Gray Fox, but a little bit larger, yet smaller than a coyote.
The black back on a nice Jackal is something else. It's thick and almost padded-like. As
mentioned previously, the Jackal do respond to calls in similar manner as do coyotes here.

In addition to Jackal and the African Wildcat, I also collected a very respectable Warthog
and Springbuck. It was a great hunt and I enjoyed visiting your country and Namibia.

We also shot a few Dassies, which are similar in ways to our Rock Chucks here.

There's lots of "varmint hunting" in South Africa and Namibia that many times goes unnoticed,
since most people go after big game.

Here is a crow shoot near Cape Town. These crows are Pied Crows, and have some white
on them. Gary did the shooting and I did the video work.

Wow,nice cat and warthog you got there,I have a black footed cat-feral cat cross as a pet.I use him to practice my calls
I've also recently bought a call from Gary,it works great. His website is Africanpredator.com it has a wealth of information.
