Looking for a four legged hunting partner . No sure if this dog breed would be a good decoy/recovery dog... I am looking for a hunting dog that would also be a good family dog...all information is appreciated....
JRT's are a roll of the dice. I have had some great ones, but some have been very mean. They will be good hunting dogs, but if you have young kids, be weary.
My vote for hunting, family, trainable, and hard working is a cowdog or a cur.
Well it looks like a cur dog might be the best bet....anyone know a cur breeder in new mexico ... I was going to try to get a pup from tony at P.U. but I see he has stopped the dog industry for now...
Well I have run a Jagds and they can be a good dog. Good pets as well if you spend the time with them. No difference than any other breed of dog. I have also run hounds,Curs, Airedales, and Drathaars. They all bring something to the table. But in my opinion most people should stay away from terriers. They are harder to control and require more work to make a decent dog. On the other hand the best dog I run currently for coyotes both in fall and spring is an Airedale terrier female. But I have put alot of time in with her. Good luck in your decision. Though not used by most take a look at a Drathaar. Very good dogs.
I have had several jagd's and still have one. In my opinion they're good family dogs, great hunting dogs(depending on the type you do) and can do recovery work well. But they are pretty single minded, hard headed and are always hunting
so not sure about decoying.
Brent how was the Drathaar in the AZ heat? I have been really considering getting one. If you know someone in AZ who has a Drathaar I sure would like to see it. Thanks
It handled the heat alright. It had come from farther north so there was some adjusting. But it seemed to be doing about the same as my other dogs.
I don't at the moment but plan to buy a pup this spring. I'm down to one made dog with a pup I'm working with and would feel better if I had one more coming up thru the ranks.
I would verify through people that are in the industry that the breeder is reputable and doesn't just breed this to that not having a clue about some of the stock. Lots of scrub dogs out there from these types of practices.
I beleive in the jagd world that most of the breeder are just breeding this to that with no concideration of how the dog hunts. Very very few jagds get hunted in the US and most are what they call tested, Or feild trial dogs.
So I guess my question to you would be, who would you recomend that are in the "industry"?
