Javelina hunting in West Texas... what bullet? ***UPDATE***

Never said they were, only that Yellowhammer shoots animals of similar size with his 223. Maybe you should learn how to read!

Read your post again,. You didn't say anything about animals of similar size. You said PIGS. What you said and what you meant were 2 different things.


Not to mention pigs and javelina are not close to similar size, body composition or otherwise. It is a senseless comparison to make.
 
Just bring a good 22. If you can get in bow range, you can get close enough to shoot them in the ear with a 22. Get close, shoot straight, no worries. All pigs are pork, Compare away.
 
I ended up buying some of the 62gr Barnes and did some quick load development. Found a load charge that shot ok and rolled with it for now. I will do more tweaking later on but needed a handful to shoot a doe.

It's anterless season right now so I got set up in a clump of trees in the middle of a CRP field where we see deer travel regularity. The land owner had mowed a few paths through it so it made it easy to see critters.

I spotted a coyote in one of the paths 120 yards out, around 7:20 and let one rip! Shot a little farther back than ideal but he did the spin move ran 30 yards and dropped. Awesome! Usually no matter what I'm hunting if I see a coyote it turns into a coyote hunt.

4 minutes later I spotted a group of 5 does and fawns making their way across the CRP. They were headed my way but were making their way down wind as well. I waited for a frontal shot because I wanted the opportunity to recover one of those cool 4 pedal bullets. I let it rip at 130 yards. Heard the WHOP and she ran 30 yards, stood there for 10 seconds and dropped. Impressed!

I gutted her and couldn't find the bullet anywhere in the gut pile. Lungs were complete mush though. I was starting to get a little bummed then looked down and in the last rib on the opposite side of the entrance I saw a hole. Stuck my finger in there and pulled out copper gold! I FOUND IT!

Like I said, very impressed with terminal performance and expansion!

I think you found your bullet,,, good luck with the Javalenas. I used to hunt them in AZ and they are good to eat. Like stated, watch out for the musk gland and try to keep the meat clean from hair.
There are lots of recipes around.

Very cool, always nice when you can recover the bullet and see the expansion given the terminal ballistics. I hunt big game with the same bullet (130gr Barnes TTSX) out of my 270 and it puts animals down with authority. I'd love to use a Barnes bullet for my AR, but they are so flippin' expensive and I'm not restricted to shooting a lead-free bullet so I've stuck with other known quantities for now. Looks like it's working great for you.

About the only way you will retrieve a Barnes is to shot'em one end to the other.

They sure are a neat looking little critter. I'g like to shoot one or 3 someday.

I'd say thin skinned. They do not have the plate that feral hogs have. Doesn't take a lot to kill a javelina.
