Johnny Stewart Electri-call

A guy I was doing business with in N.Y. heard I liked hunting predators so he (fellow hunter as well) rummaged through some gear and gave me an Electri-call record player from way back when. Came with 2 45RPM records of rabbit and woodpecker in distress,,,speaker attaches to box with bracket, has long cord, same runs on a bunch of D batteries. Anyone know what year these were made? Can't seem to find anything on "Net.......worth any dough if working? I have to grab some batts. and fire this thing up...........

This is only a guess but it would be early to mid 60's. This will tell my age but I was in high school and a neighbor had one he used some. From what I remember him saying it eat batteries like crazy.

Agree with Crapshoot Gerald should be able to get a lot closer to actual time.

Thanks for the replies. I even found a serial number still on the box......From my background in electronics, looks like 1 set of batts. to power the motor for the records, and the other set to run the amplifier..........I wonder if I got it working whether I'd be able to call in a REAL OLD predator!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

P.S. When my wife was a kid she thought that by turning on an old radio she would still hear the old stations.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

me!

Back when my wife and i started dating. My father in law give me one it it still works. And i have 8 or 10 records with mine. I have to old packge that Johnny Stewart sent the records in to my father in law he gave it to me it is pricess. G Stewart is one of my hero's when it comes to predator hunting.Because of him he has up dated the sport so much . I rememeber when my mom bought me a JS 512 caller and AMP and tapes and crows and a owl decoys for Chrismas. That Had to be the BEST gift i have ever got.I work the crows over then i got into predator hunting. Beside turkey hunting i will coyote hunt any day. (Thanks MR Stewart) for making the stuff to help me get into coyote hunting .PS sorry i am so long winded VM /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I am humbled by kind words like that. Gives me a good feeling to know that my Dad and our family did something worthwhile that helped so many others enjoy the great outdoors in a unigue way.

If John can give me a better description of the actual player, I can possibly zero in on a manufacture date range. Serial number would help some but not totally. How many batteries would it take to run it? Was the case metal or plastic? Was the case Green or a pinkish tan? Was the battery compartment lid hinged or screwed down?

Does it have the jack for a PA microphone? Did the records come in a multi sleve'd album? If you can answer a few of those questions then I can better give you a date range.

As far as value, it is worth what you can get somebody to pay you. I am aware of older callers in mint condition selling for up to a $100. That is not a lot, but something. I used to trade new callers for some of the older stuff when I owned the company. I have got quite a collection now and have turned down some pretty good callers for the archives. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Gerald,

Thanks for the reply. The case is green plastic, serial number #10236. Has volume control on same side as Speaker and Mic jacks. Two records only inside the top lid, held in by spring clip, records are in their own jackets. The record deck lifts up on a 6-7" hinge to the right towards the tone arm after you untwist a small metal catch that looks like part of a chrome .22 shell casing. The battery holders (2) and electronics are underneath the deck, and both take 6 "D" batteries each. I also have the speaker with 1/4 inch plug.......Thanks again and best regards,

John

That is probably a mid 70's caller. Lot's of them out there. If it is in good condition it you would be doing good if someone gave you $50-$75 for it. We started making those in 1968 and stopped in 1980. They were made with vaccum formed cases(thinner material and softer) till 1970 and then they were made with cases that were injection molded (harder and much firmer).

Hold onto it for thirty more years and my grandchildren may give you more. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks once again, I'm going to try and fire this up sometime today and see if it still works. I'll let you know. And if you REALLY want it for your collection, I'll take 15 to 20 Grand (Cash or Gold), today only. Operators are standing by...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Then and Now...

It's fun to read stories like Varmint Masters. It's also fun to make your own.

I took my 11 year old out last weekend. He got a new .410 shotgun and we were going to do some squirel hunting. He got to run the JS Squirel call for the day, and of course, I had the PreyMaster in my hunting bag and we did a stand or two for coyotes. Let me tell you, that little guy can mix up some sounds. Those coyotes must have thought there was a critter riot going on /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It doesn't always have to be super hi tech to be fun. The hand call and the prey masters made our day.

Hi to me my is pricess. Just knowing who made it in it time it was the top of the line caller.Mine is a Metal case caller with big speaker. The records look like new shape i will never sale it thanks again VM

Well,

Just for an update, this thing works, and works well after all this time. Pretty neat sounds coming from those old 45's. It's a keeper, and heavy with those 12 batteries in the hole! Don't make 'em like this anymore...........
