jonny stewart preymaster??

Lee,

You'll be hard pressed to find a better caller for the $. The sounds they offer are great, the volume is more than enough. Just make sure you're ok w/ it's limitations, corded speaker/remote, only 4 sounds per card. I just got tired of fighting the cord in the cold weather after one season and opted for a scorpion. I'll always have the JS as a backup.

I had the preymaster 3 w/the wire, real pain. Recently got the preymaster 4, no wire, remote, well over 100 yd range, and it holds 3 soundcards- 12 sounds. You might check some of the post under "electronic callers". Some people had or are having problems with them, but HS has offered fixes or replaced them.

I just thought i would give you an idea i use hand calls in combination with the Johnny Stewart attractor
attractor.jpg
and a edge rabbit decoy

call until i see something comming in and then i hit the butten on the attractor that i have right beside my rabbit that flopping around its been a good trick and i also give the decoy some rabbit cent spray it works good so far and its not verry pricey at $35.00 bucks for the caller and $20.00 for the rabbit hope i help give you some ideas

I agree with this statemant. With the ability to only load one sound card at a time its difficult to change up sounds quickly and wthout giving up your location. Plus @ 18.99 for 4 sounds the cards are'nt much of a bargain. I'll be in the market for a new caller soon.

Check out the PM4 unit. Prey Master 4 from Johnny Stewart and Hunters Specialty.
--------------------
Pros:
These sell for under $200.00 new.

100 yard range (250 yard under Ideal Line of sight conditions-but not tested yet by me) on the remote with remote volume control. I tested the 100 yard claim and found it to be true on my PM4 unit.

Plays two sounds simultaneously

Holds 3 different sound cards at the same time- each sound card has 4 different sounds on it. Total of 12 different sounds can be played remotely.

Sounds are clear and realistic sounding.
The neighborhood cats all came to investigate the dying rabbit and distress rodent calls. Had a big owl come to the call also one night. Called the owl right up onto my front porch next to the window. He came back to the caller three times that night before he finally figured out it was not a real mouse crying for help.

Used the PM4 crow call sound card and have called in the crows several times. Had 12 crows flying all around my house.

Have not used it to call in coyotes yet. I want to wait until I am hunting before I train the yotes. If I get them to come to this call I intend to shoot them not educate them. But I bet that it works good, unless someone else with the same caller had already educated the local yotes in my area first.

Cons:

Sound cards cost $18 to $20 and some of the sound cards come with sounds that are found on other sound cards. So you can have two sound cards and only 7 different sounds on these two cards. The names on the sounds may look similar but the sounds can be a little bit different perhaps. For example one sound card has a sound on it that's called Rodent distress while a second sound card may call one on of the sounds distress rodent. I can't tell if they are the exact same sound or two different rodent like sounds. I'll have to test that out. My first thought was that they were the same sound. But I could be wrong.

Sometimes the remote won't get the sound to work. I have to turn the base unit off and on again before I can get the remote to work with the base unit. So test the PM4 out and make sure that all the sound cards are working with the remote before you walk the base unit 100 yards out in a field and return to your stand. You may find that you have to walk that 200 yard again to get it working. It works about 60% of the time for me. But I have not taken it out hunting in cold weather. yet. I have only played with out around my yard.

Rechargeable NiMH batters of the 2500 amp size won't all fit into the battery compartment. They are too big around. The smaller NiMH batteries may fit better as they are slightly smaller in diameter. The unit takes 4 AA batteries. It works well with 4 Alkaline and or 4 Lithium Ion batteries but these were not rechargeable types. All my NiMH are not going to work well with this unit as they are all the larger milliamp size.

Base Unit is not waterproof or even water resistant. The sound card slots are open to the weather even if there is a sound card in the slot. I would recommend making a waterproof carrier box for the unit. The Antenna will have to stick out of the box though. And the antenna is on the side of the unit. So you are going to have to have the unit near the side of any waterproof box that you stick the base unit into to keep it from being ruined by a sudden rain or snow melting on the unit. Water and electrical circuits don't mix well

You are limited to only 12 sounds at a time. And you can't download new sounds (mp3 or wave) off the Internet like you can for some other caller.

Overall the PM4 is a good unit for the price

And the Customer Service from Johnny Stewart has been EXCELLENT. I have called them two or three times and spoke to a guy named Joe and he even called me back the next day to check on me. I have emailed him and he is good at getting email back to me. In fact he sent me two new cards for free when I told him that some of the sound cards had the same sound on them.

The unit would be better if there was internal memory inside the unit and it was waterproof. And if the remote contained a LED screen like the Foxpro unit does.

Lee,
Coyotehunter really summed it up. I have a PM4 and really like it. I got it 'cause I thought it was the best value for the dollar. There are fancier callers, but then again, they cost more.

I have a Preymaster and the only thing I dont like about it is the cord but it aint too bad.I have called in one bobcat and had a coyote coming in until it busted me so I know it works. If it makes dyin bunny sounds it will work sooner or later.I havent called in a bunch of stuff but it aint the calls fault,I wish it was but it aint. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I have had a Preymaster for several years now and it works great and does what its supposed to do. I don't care for the speaker on a cord. But I knew that when I bought it. I have a bunch of the sound cards. I have picked up half of them at discount prices, just by keeping my eyes open. Im going to up grade to the mp4 this year just so I can get away from the cord.

Line of sight with new batteries should go past 300, dads did when I had it on top of a 6 foot fence post. I think it was 362 yards when I gave up cause it was cold. Sounds and volume changed as normal. I have not yet put it up against my FX5 to see what one will work the farthest.
