We had a tough time with the breeze and wind on the ranch that we called on yesterday. Almost all of our favorite stand locations the wind was blowing the wrong way. We did find some good locations that we had the wind direction in our favor but that put us facing the sun.
Crystal and I both missed 2 coyotes with our shotguns that we should not have missed.
We had one coyote get downwind of my X-Wave caller and JP7mag dropped it right at 50 yards away with a 1-1/4 oz load of TSS #3 shot.

We had one great stand towards the end of the day that we will never forget. Crystal and I had shotguns and we were sitting in front of a juniper, JP7mag was about 70 yards above us just below the top of a ridge. There was a ridge in front of us that was about 150 yards away and it had quite a few junipers on it.
I started playing Bay Bee Cottontail and after about 6 minutes we had two coyotes a little over 100 yards away start screaming at the source of the Bay Bee Cottontail sound. It was not alarm barks it was challenge screams. So I hit my #4 preset sound which is Male Coyote Challenge #4 sound on volume 40 and played it for about 8 to 10 seconds. I am pretty sure I replied back to them in less that 5 seconds and they didn't like it.
The sun was in our eyes but we could see these coyotes on the side of the ridge jumping around and screaming at us. JP7mag shot the coyote that was the farthest away with his 243 Win and we could clearly hear the meat report.
So I hit my #2 preset sound that is Pup Distress 3 on volume 40. Just a few seconds later we saw the other coyote jumping around and moving between the junipers but it was getting closer to us and it was still screaming at us. JP7mag couldn't see this coyote because the junipers were in the way.
15 to 30 seconds later this coyote went back up the ridge a little and got away from the junipers that were blocking JP7mag's view. Just a few seconds later we saw the coyote drop dead and heard JP7mag's 243 Win at the same time.

This is a picture of the screaming coyote pair with JP7mag and Crystal.
I have my 4 preset sounds set up for emergency use. These sounds are not my favorite sounds they are sounds I want to use instantly in emergency situations.
Preset #1, Coyote Pup Screams on volume 40 for stopping coyotes that are running off after another coyote gets shot.
Preset #2, Pup Distress 3 on volume 40 for stopping coyotes or calling coyotes back in that start to run off.
Preset #3, Vole Squeaks on volume 25 for coaxing in coyotes that have held up at 250 to 500 yards away.
Preset #4, Male Coyote Challenge 4 on volume 40 to challenge coyotes that have just challenge me.
These preset sounds don't work every time I use them. But from what I have seen the sooner you can start these sounds the better chances you will have of them working. Challenging coyotes back within 5 seconds works better than challenging them back in 30 seconds or longer from what I have seen.
