Just can't seem to shoot this rifle

you ever have a rifle and just can't seem to shoot it? I put a Timney trigger in this Ruger Gen2 and she does ok UNTIL you want to stretch one out there. I've missed more with this rifle than anything I think I've ever had. Last night I had one come in about 250yds out and for the life of me I would swear I hit it, pic looks good from the millisecond I squeezed the trigger, however it ran off and I never found it. :mad: No point playing the video, yote didn't look hit! :mad:
Last year I started off the same with THIS rifle, and I'm done with, it'll be the last time I mess with it. If I were to guess I'd say it's the flimsy stock

i've been shooting since I was a kid and reloading the same, Dad taught me mega years ago. I took my Rem 700 out for a month shooting prairie dogs a further distance with consistency on PD. I'm done with this thing, there's not another rifle I own that has this issue

There are a lot of things that could be the problem.

I have about five rifles I rotate through each season. I know each rifle, scopes, stocks, triggers and loads tweeked to be perfect for me. If I miss I know exactly why. There are times I don't believe why and carry a small target stand in the truck and have yet they have a rifle off enough to miss like I did..

I find that factory synthetic stocks are quit functional, in fact to the point of taking off an after market stock and replacing it with a factory stock. I do make sure that my stock can't touch the barrel no matter what, sure a piece of paper might slide between the stock and barrel in the shop but set it on the rest with a heavy scope, a loaded mag and the sun warming the stock and we have a different story. An hour with a socket and sandpaper and skim bedding the action can turn the flimsiest stock into a reliable shooter.

In all your work with this rifle has it ever thrown a flyer so far off the target that it would miss a coyote at the distance you were shooting? Do you sight it in the same way you hunt with it? Such as sighting it in on a bench and then clamping it on a tripod to hunt

Good luck

yea I've had this thing for about a year, been through all the typical checks and balances... I'm just irritated & ranting, It just won't shoot with the 700...

I'm a little lost here, does the rifle itself not shoot well or do you not shoot it well. Either way you don't like the rifle, in the first situation I'd send it back to Ruger and get it fixed before pawning a bad rifle off on some unsuspecting buyer, if you just cant get into the rifle sell it. Like said above if you have no confidence in the rifle youll never like it.

I'm just ranting should've kept to myself. Ain't trying to pawn a bad rifle on to anyone. All rifles aren't the same and some just shoot better than others. IMO this is/was a budget rifle with budget results, and TOO many things about it I don't like. Not going to pour any more money or time into a budget rifle. It won't work for my hunting style.

@Hunter55
Yes Sir feel your pain on the Ruger American (? assuming because you mentioned Gen 2) Gen 2 and understand the need to rant. They are a budget class rifle, which a majority are actually very good for the price point. That said doesn't negate your experience with the rifle in question. Personally I think it is wise that you are considering sending it down the road versus being frustrated with it's performance.
Once you lose confidence in the gear it will not perform. Like you I once had a very negative experience with a Ruger rifle specifically a M77 back in the 1980's that rifle was crap in my eyes. The next owner thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. He never asked the rifle to shoot at beyond 125 yds. We was both happy I took the funds and put it into a Remington 700 that performed well for me.

Its not the rifle :devilish:

Wouldnt take much to miss that shot. Basically shooting 250yds with a red dot. Just the tiniest little flinch/muscle twitch, a breath, or a heart beat and you are missing vitals. The crosshairs are bigger than its head…
