Well, I'm still optics shopping and went to BPS due to the wide selection of scopes. Somehow, we ended up talking calibers of rifles best suited for an 8 year old. The salesman said the 7MM-08 was a far better round than a 243. Due to better bullet selection and far more knock down power. My comment was, "lets get back to scopes"!! Amazing!

I have a cousin out in Colorado that grew up with a rem 6mm fed with nosler partition bullets. Used it for elk and mule deer

Knock down power, one of my favorite terms in the hunting world! More energy sure, but actual knock down power does not exist not in my own little world anyways. A while back there was a segmant on one of the shooting shows about knock down power, the test wasn't real scientific but they were trying to show exactly what I mean. You can get more energy transfer but actual "knock down power" does not exist.

I would also argue that there is a bigger better selection of 6 mm over 7 mm bullets.

Awhile back one of those gun counter cowboys gave me a lecture about how the 204 was ballistically superior to the 220 swift. Sigh...

I might have leaned towards the 243 for a child simply for less recoil.
