hi i am going to purchase a new rifle in the near future,3 or 4 months(hopefully less). but if im going to shell out 400-500$$ then im am going to do some research and firgure out what im getting and if its worth what i paid for. well i have already decided on 3 diffrent caliber choices. either a .270, .30-06, or a .308. i know this is not a simple question but i weigh 155 lbs and am bout 5'9". i was wondering how much recoil. like how much reciol i mean which one has the most. if you can compare it to shotguns. for example: the .270 kicks about as much as a 16 ga or somthin liek that. also what bullet weight and to what range would that bullet be effective /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif ?? thanks all u awesome people.

PS.- also go sign the petition in on eof the other forums about cheating lieing sceintist's

Well this is an easy one, get a remington 710 30-06. It is as acuurate as the shooter and it has a scope and a detachable magazine. The magizines are only 12 bucks apiece so you can get several. It also has a nylon stock which may be a plus. I have one and love it. There is one for sale down in the classifieds if you are interested.

To be honest with you, it is probly the best shooting giun i have. I have shot 1 inch groups out of the box without a very good rest. I love mine and would never part with it.

Either the 270 or the 3006 would be ideal. I would opt for 130gr in 270 and 150gr in 3006. The 308 really doesn't lose much to the 3006 but you will find a lot more factory ammo for the 3006. I would recomend any of the popular bolt actions, remington 700, Ruger 77, Winchester M60 or Coyote, Savage 110, or (my favorite)browning abolt. The Winchester coyote in 308 would be a nice gun if you didn't want to walk around a lot, it might be kind of heavy for packing around. Whatever gun you end up with biggest priority is get good optics. If you get one of the package deals they usually come with bushnell or similar 35-50 dollor scopes. They will work but you would be better served with a burris or leupold or sightron. I had always heard to spend as much on the scope as you did on the gun...while that may be a little excessive I would still stay away from cheap scopes, rule out BSA completely. A good scope will have a lifetime waranty so its a good investment. I recomend burris because they are nice and clear and reasonably priced. Good Luck to you.

Any of the three calibers would be good. As for recoil it depends on a lot of factors from weight of the rifle, if it has a decent recoil pad, shooting with a sling, bolt or semi/gas operated, etc. Generally the .30-06 will have the most of the three you mentioned, but hot heavy loads in light rifles of the other two may not make that so.

The .30-06 is a fine caliber for just about all North American big game here in the lower 48.

A good recoil pad and a longer eye relief scope like a Leupold can help make rough recoil tolerable. Muzzle braking can also be done but that gets into more money.

I shoot a Remington 700 ADL in .30-06 w/ 24" standard barrel and factory trigger taken down to 3" and a cheap Tasco 3-9x40 scope. Last weekend I shot a 100 yard grouping about 1/2 to 3/4" in size shooting factory Winchester soft point loads. The scope needs to go though since it was having POI adjustment issues.

At the price point you are at I'd recommend looking at the Remington 700ADL, the 710, or a Savage Rifle. I got my 700ADL new with the scope for $409. The 710s are going for around $370 w/ a scope, and the Savages about the same I think.

Use the factory scope to get you started. Plan however on getting a good scope and save the pennies for it. I like Leupold, others have their favorites as well, but a quality scope will run a couple hundred for a basic 3x9.

Realistically the scope is where you want to spend the money. I'm sure the Remington 710s shoot just fine. One very nice feature of the 710s is that they have a 60 degree bolt rotation instead of a 90 degree which gives much more clearance between bolt handle and scope. One downside is that the barrels of the 710s are pressed and not screwed in so there isn't much to do for changing the barrel, but if you are simply looking for a basic big game rifle and occasional weekend shooting you shouldn't need to change barrels in your lifetime. People say it's an ugly rifle, big deal. Deer can't tell if they got shot by a nicely laquered walnut stocked Browning Grade II or a grey synthetic 710 from Wal-Mart. Besides, just camo the rifle up with a couple cans of Krylon and all is well. IIRC the 710 has a Monte Carlo stock which is nice--at least to me.

Savage makes good rifles from the folks I've been talking to. They are like the 710s, somewhat. They may not be the prettiest girl at the party but they shoot well. And my one experience with their customer support was excellent.

thtank you for all your help. i think i am going to go with the .270 becuase that is what my uncle and my freinds dad shoots. i was just wondering out of the theree rifle cartidages listed above which is the cheepest to purchase ammo for. i will not be reloadibng but might in the future. thank you.

Robert,

Enjoy the .270. It will do a great job for you. Another possibility...you can get a new Remington 700 for $360. You can top it with a Nikon Monarch 4x for $209, a B&L Elite 3000 3-9x40 for $149, or a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 Matte for $187. This would keep you in your budget range. You can call Gid at Green Country Gun & Pawn in Pryor, OK for the rifle (918-825-4885). Tell him Bob Connell referred you. You can go to Bear Basin to order the scopes: Bear Basin

This way you will have a quality outfit you will keep. Ask Gid if he can get you an ADL Synthetic without the bolt lock.

Good Hunting,

Bob

hi i am going to get a rifle in a .270 caliber and i was wondering if any people know what a good brand would be for this caliber. or like a pakage deal or somthin

Savage also makes a nice little package deal. I believe that Winchester offers (they did a couple of years ago) a M70 package gun as well.

hi i was at wally world today w/ my mom and noticed a savage package deal it waqs on clearance for $300. i think the package was like 60adl or somthin. o well it was synthetic stock 3x9-40mm scope and in 7mm mag caliber. is this a good deal? and does the 7mm kick more then the .270?

Robert Dutton,
Calypso has given you the best information twice already. Why settle for something less quality for same amount of money? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Robert,
The 7mag will kick like a mule in any of the guns that you have mentioned, and probably bring tears to your eyes if you try to shoot it more than a few times in a row. Of the calibers that you have mentioned I would go with the 308. The recoil is more of a push than a punch. Why not a 243? Unless you have an up coming Moose or grizzly bear hunt coming up in the near future, the 243 is a GREAT caliber with a wide range of bullets to choose from that you will enjoy rather than dread shooting with almost no recoil. Also have you looked at any used guns? Most of the used guns that you find have been shot a few times during hunting season the put in the closet until the next year, so with that in mind you can often find a good deal on a used rifle. Personaly I would rather find a deal on a quality used gun than pay retail for a cheap gun. Good luck

Used guns aren't a bad idea. Here are a few that I bumped into just casually cruising:

Not too much money: http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=4514637
Don't know much about these, but the price is pretty good: http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?ItemNum=2920899
Here's a real nice M700 if you're so inclinded: http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=4518232

That's just a sampling of what's available if you look around. .270s are everywhere, check out some local shops and the paper, you might find a good deal there too.
