Kicks buck kicker 20 ga choke

Does it matter which gun? Isn’t a 20ga a 20ga?
Yes…It matters as different shotgun manufacturers have different nominal bore diameters. So the choke constriction can vary by a few thousandths of an inch.

I’ve never heard of the firearm the poster is referencing. It would be best to contact Kicks to see if they have any info that could help. That firearm could very well use the same choke design as another manufacturer.

Nope. Shotgun bores are all over the map. For many years the American standard 12 gauge bore size was .729". The European 12 bore was tighter at .723". Then backboring became popular and now bore sizes range from the tight Benelli/Beretta .723" to Mossberg's ridiculous .775" bore in the 835 series pump guns. That .775" is actually a 10 gauge bore size.

The terms describing choke size such as "improved cylinder" "modified" and "full" really are just general terms. An IC should be .010" of constriction from the bore size, a Modified .020" and a Full .030". Real constriction is the constricted choke area of the barrel subtracted from the actual cylinder bore size. A Full choke should be about .030" of constriction. Subtract .030" from the .723" Benelli bore and you have .693" and a full choke. Do the same for that Mossberg and it's .775" bore and you have .745". The same .693" in a Mossberg 835 gun would be a crazy .082" of constriction! That would be a dangerous situation. A Browning/Winchester cylinder bore in their back bored barrels is .742".

In order to really know what is going on, a guy needs to know his bore size and buy a choke with whatever amount of constriction is necessary to get the pattern he wants. Then go to the range and pattern the combination with your particular shells to see how it actually patterns. When you're really digging into this stuff you discover how finicky a shotgun bore can be. Some gun patterns are best squeaky clean and then throw looser patterns as they dirty. Others pattern best when fouled by a few shots. Temperature plays a part. Cold weather generally causes patterns to open up somewhat. Short 18.5" - 21" barrels usually need about .005" more constriction than a 26" - 30" barrel. to throw an equally dense pattern. Shotgun performance borders on witchcraft and sorcery.

I have a Manufrance Costo Supra 12ga sxs with .710 bores. With modern ammo steel, hard lead and plastic wads choke constriction is much more open than fixed chokes of days gone bye to give the sAme pattern densities.
