Knife Sharpeners + then REAL knife sharpeners

I got tired of sharpening knives and spending long periods of time on them, also using sharpeners with different parts and angles etc,I have a low tolerance level now that I have gotten older.

Then, BAM! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif a friend was with me on a trip and I watched him as he took a fur from a jackal, he suddenly held this tiny little contraption and drew the blade across the unit 3 times, well to cut a long story to a few more lines - I tell you this devise is lethal, it makes knives so sharp in 2-4 strokes that its hard to believe.

They cost about $4 and man are they worth it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I use one of these to sharpen my broad heads and knifes. They are great for me as I am not good at use a stone.

They do work,You just have to do it a couple of times while skinning. But like he said,Who has time for wet rocks!I use a fillet knife to do all my skinning .It works great and is cheap to replace after this sharpener takes all the metal off.

I had on of those smiths sharpeners, and as beagler said, they don't last long. I now have one that is simular, but is blue and white in color (can't remeber the name). It was purchased at a local hardware store. These blue and white ones have a history of lasting a long time. The man at the hardware store has replacement blades for the blue and white sharpeners, but has never sold one in 10 years.

In the year 2004 I was on a contract on a huge farm near a famous Diamond mine outside South Africa, I had 6 months to eradicate as many problem animals as I could. I used a variation of Cd's, mouth calls and an imported electronc caller, I had a team of 3 trucks, we hunted 17 days a month, good moon times, per night we called in and shot about to round it off no less than 5-7 predators, be it 1 cat and 4 jackals, or 3-5 cats and 2 jackal, whatever we got about 5 - 7 a night. After 6 months we terminated about 280 predators on this massive area. Financially it was a total blast!

Skinning was a BIG DEAL, as many we saved, ( 20 percent) and we auctioned them, sold them overseas or whatever, I even had a few full mounts mounted. I will try post a photo later.

We used scalpels, blades and an assortment of knives, some knives are crappy, and hold no edge, some do.

I tell you if we had that sharpener I mentioned above those days it would have been mighty easier, we had a very fine file and that worked well, but had a roughy finish. BUT it cut like blazes.

After I witnessed that blade sharpener in action I became a strong believer of a good blade and a good sharpener - one that makes sharp! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know the one you're talking about, I believe they are sold under the brand "Accu-Sharp". I may be wrong. I have 2 of them at home, but I'm not home, so I can't look.
I bought mine from a restaurant supplier I used to work for, back in '96. They still work wonders. And only cost a few dollars.

Thanks for making this post. I've been searching for a knife sharpener that works without taking so much time. I don't even think the Smith brand works that well, although it is the best I've found so far.

Does this contraption put a hair-splitting edge on a Gerber?

Spyderco SharpMaker... a real knife sharpener. Quick and easy to set-up and use, along with being very effective. A little research on the net and you'll find it a favorite among knifenutts.

The lansky sharpening system is hands down the best sharpener I have ever used. It may be $40, but it is well worth it. It takes a little longer to get the blades sharp, but the edges are perfect, and the blade holds its edge longer than with any other sharpener I have used.

I just read about the lansky and the Syderco SharpMaker. A little pricey for me. I'd be willing to pay if they truely work the wonders they say they do. The Redi-Edge Broadhead/Knife Sharpener sold by Cabelas is half the price, and also claims ease of use and razor edges. Anyone used one before?
