Knives of Alaska Assisted Opener

I finally received my Knives of Alaska Assisted Opener. First Impression is that this knife is big. Almost too big for every day carry. I knew it was big when I ordered it but it was their only Assisted opening Knife so I had no choice. I normally carry a Kershaw Ken Onion and this thing is a lot bigger.

This thing is ugly as Sin. My instructions to the Lady who ordered the Knife for me was this. "I like a Knife with a bright color so I can find it on the ground if I drop it." I requested Yellow and got Green since it was the lightest color they had. Still have several of the Yellow Handle Case knives only because they are yellow and hard to lose.

Sorry but I have to add that this Lady just sounded "Good Looking."

If you notice you can see that there is nothing where the Lock normally is supposed to be. I had to send a Liability Release in order to get the knife without this Lock. I hate these Locks. The only thing they are good for is to always make you use two hands opening the knife.

The Knife arrived sharp but not as sharp as I like them. Ten minutes and I could shave hairs without touching the skin. This knife is D2 steel so I applied a good coat of Froglube.

The knife popped open pretty good but not as strong as some I have. The Liner lock does not always engage as it should. I know this will wear in and start working right.

As you can see you can see through the knife. I have mixed feelings about this in that it will be easier to clean but it will be much easier to get dirty with blood and such seeping in.

The jury is out on the edge holding ability, which is why I bought the knife to begin with.

Interesting,,,, I didn't even know KOA made something like that. I've always thought of them in terms of hunting/skinning knives.
I'd bet it holds an edge though but I'd worry about it collecting lint and such in the pocket too.
Definatly let us know how it works out.
Thanks.

Only had it a few days and you know how some knives lose their edge just riding in your Pocket, so far this one has not. I have done a few light cutting jobs with it but nothing yet to really test it. The edge is holding and it is very sharp right now. Apparently the angle that KOA recommends is the same as I use. I have always been able to get a Knife really sharp and it only took a few minutes after getting this one to get that exceptionally sharp edge. The Spring needs to be a little stronger or the Knife needs to loosen up to get it to pop in place like it should. I have a bunch of high dollar autos and I will not carry one everyday. Just have not seen a good way to keep them closed without using a Lock. To me the Kershaw Ken Onion is the perfect knife when you remove the lock, except for the Steel it is made from. They get sharp but really will not hold an edge under hard use. What I call hard use is cutting cages on Fish. I let my Kids cut out the ribs on Fillets and a good day would be 25-30 fish. The Kershaw is dull after cutting 50 Fillets. Of course the Kids use a piece of Plywood as a cutting board but cutting up a Hog dulls it even quicker.
