Krylon Camo Strikes Again...Woodland Camo!

I decided my savage model 10fcp-k needed a makeover. I looked over some patterns and decided I wanted to do a traditional "woodland" style camo on the stock. The problem was getting the right pattern I wanted. I looked on the web and found some companies that sold the stencil and even tried cutting them myself out of painter's tape...didn't work too well. I found a local vinyl company that was able to cut the pattern I wanted on their vinyl cutter. So heres what we have (sorry for the cell phone pics)...

Did some prep work, cleaned the stock and taped off the butt pad and the inside of the stock. Started out with a base coat of Krylon OD green

Let the base coat dry for about an hour (with the help of a hair dryer as well) and added some of the patterns to the stock.

After I got all the patterns in place on the base coat, I added a coat of Krylon dark brown to the mix.

Once again, I dried with a blow dryer (or heat gun) and let sit for about an hour. Then added a few more stencils on.

Now it was time for the final coat. I decided I wanted tan to be the major color in the pattern, so it was my final color.

I let it dry and began to peel the stickers off.

I added a coat of krylon matte clear to help protect it. You're supposed to wait 24 hours before reassembly, but I was impatient.

Overall, I was really happy with the results. Only thing I wish I would have done, would be to have done it in a more "permanent" finish like duracoat or something similar. I've had pretty good luck with krylon in the past though, it seems to hold up well for cheap spray paint.

That is nearly identical to the way I do my Krylon jobs in woodland. I go a little bigger on my stencils and I make them myself with painters tape though. It always comes out looking better than I anticipate and continually amaze myself with it. Looks good.

Could you explain how you make stencils with painters tape? Maybe some pics?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks,
Russ

You guys just amaze me when you do this.. im going to have to watch the Cabelas bargain cave and if i can pick up a cheapy stock for the 10/22 or the R700 im going to have to try painting one up.

Cut them with an exacto-knife/hobby knife. I'm the least technologicaly savvy person you will meet and the process of posting pics is lost on me. I have my brother do it for me(pics) when I have something worth putting up. I will be doing another one in the near future, I will get pictures of the process and get him to put them up.

Note that I don't even have an avatar, cuz I don't know how to put one up. I can type, I can click "Submit".....that's about it

Nice job. I got a 870 supermag with the crappy finish that is going to get paint. After that my REM700 .243 with the same finish is next. Glad to see all of these ideas before I give er a whirl!

This is an awesome job! Can a moderator make this a sticky? I'm not that bright but this really points out how to apply the stencils.

Also, can you PM me the name of the vinyl shop and do you know if they would sell another set of those stencils?

Thanks guys! The crappy cell phone pictures don't do justice, I'll have to snap some better pics of the rifle with my digital camera.

Heretic, PM sent!

I have in the past with good success. You'll have to be careful though with what types of solvent you use if you use krylon. Good old hoppes no. 9 didnt seem to harm the finish for me. The great thing about krylon is that its very easy to fix or touch up. and if you dont like the way it turns out, a can of brake parts cleaner and a rag takes it right off. If you're going to be painting the barrel, be sure to protect the bore by plugging the muzzle. An ear plug works great for this.
