Lapping Leupold Rings?

I have a set of Leupold Dual Dovetail 30mm Rings to mount on my Rem 700 LVSF. Is it necessary to lap them? I called Leupold and they said it is not required. But should I lap them or not? Also after lapping a set of rings what would you recommend coating the inside of the rings with so they don't rust. Any info would be greatly appricated. Thanks Tom

I dont lap rings unless I have to. get your rings straight I use baby powder set scope in and if its hitting 80%I dont lap.

I was quite surprised the first time I lapped scope rings. Initial contact was in the 20% range. Now I lap all my rings and haven't seen a new ring that initially had more than 40% of the scope bearing surface actually making contact with the lapping rod. I've never seen a ring that has been lapped have more than 90% contact.

I don't feel that it will hurt you in anyways unless you take off too much material.

I would definitely lap them. If for no other reason than just to drastically increase the bearing surface. I bought the two lapping bars many years ago. They paid for themselves many times over through the years. Lap them properly and torque your screws properly, and you wil never have those unsightly ring marks that so many people have on their scopes. Tom.

You have it all wrong. One of the main reasons for lapping rings is so that your scope WILL NOT slip. Proper lapping of rings will increase the bearing surface of your scope to rings tremendously.

If your friend had a problem with slippage because of lapping then whoever lapped the rings did it wrong. Lapping is done to prevent slipage. Tom.
