Larry Willis Belted Magnum Collet Sizing Die

Anybody used one of these? Its supposed to extend the life of belted magnum cases by getting rid of the dreaded bulge just above the belt. I have 100 new Norma 7mm Rem Mag cases for a custom elk/deer rifle and was thinking of ordering one to start load developement. Figured running the cases through that die each time would keep them all consistent throughout their life span. Thoughts?

"The Larry Willis die is a huge money wasting gimmick. If you size your brass correctly you will NEVER run into this so called bulge, the bulge is caused by FL sizing after every firing, you need to bump the shoulder .002" and headspace off the shoulder, not the belt. The belt dimension CANNOT change, but the shoulder can, and this shoulder movement causes EXCESSIVE stretching just above the belt where the web ends.
I have several belted cartridges and none have ever had this problem because I resize to MY CHAMBER DIMENSIONS, not the FL DIE dimensions.
Please help yourself and resize your brass correctly and shelve that Larry Willis die, it is NOT necessary and will only damage your brass, as you have already found.

Cheers."

Posted by a LRH forum member, I have heard of people getting more brass life out of the 7RM by jamming the bullet into the lands and using the should to set headspace but I have limited experience reloading for the belted magnums and havent tried this method before

I size my 338wm brass off the shoulder, same as my other rifles. Never had an issue. 0.0015-0.002 for bolt guns, that's after the bolt starts to have some tension during bolt closure.

My dad has one and it works great, especially when used with the new “collet saving shellholder”. We bought one because we purchased a .308 norma magnum, which came with close to 200 rounds of ammunition, most of which would not chamber in the rifle. After “starting over” (pulling bullets and dumping powder), and using this die, they will all chamber now.

Worst case scenario : if you don’t use enough wax / lube, and don’t use the shell holder, you can damage the collet (but collets are for sale separately). Larry Willis designed a great product, that has now been improved with the additional shellholder. RIP Larry
