Laser engraving on a suppersor

First I'm going to start off by saying I know ZERO about suppressors.

My question is for my jeweler, who does laser engraving, he was approached by someone who needs something engraved on a suppressor.....the owners name and something else, apparently it has to do with making it legal........Does that sound right?

He was asking me what material they are made of and how thick the material is, I'm guessing so he has an idea of how deep to set the laser.....

I told him I couldn't answer any of those questions, but I have a source that may.......so here we are.

Any input would be appreciated.

look up the brand and contact the maker.

They would know the specifics, especially if it's not a breakdown version that allows the owner to open it and clean it. If he is asking it must be welded and only the maker would know what the specific steel, aluminum, or titanium was used.

yes, that does sound right. and it sounds to me like the guy is making the suppresser himself. in other words doing a form 1 build.

the guy wanting the engraving done should know all about what the material is. he is probably the only one that knows what it is. the jeweler needs to ask him.

Most laser machines under $10 grand cannot cut or engrave very deeply, even in aluminum. On the other hand, suppressors and other gun parts that are cerakoted/duracoated are great candidates for laser engraving, because the lettering is cut only through the coating.

I am not sure if etching the serial number only through the coating is "permanent" enough to satisfy NFA rules on serial numbers.
