Lasermax Uni-IR info

Looking for experiences anyone has had with the Lasermax Uni-IR. I'm especially interested in how far this will be visible through genIII NV. I've searched everywhere I can and have not found anything stating the effective range. Any other thoughts or opinions about this or similar devices would be appreciated as well.

I can't tell you what the limit is, but I get a good bright return out to 450 yds or better. I just happen to have a wood line at the end of a field that I can use for reference. I just stepped outside and checked it out. I can get a return out at about 700 yds but I don't think it is at all useable there. The moa of the dot may not be useable at the 450 yd distance, but it does not suffer from intensity issues. I definitely would be comfortable taking a shot at 200 with it. I've got one mounted on a rifle that I use the Photon XT on. I dialed it in to match the crosshair location at 100yds and I can reliably put a bullet into the 10 ring at that yardage. I think it is a useful tool, but I don't think to use it when I've got the Photon on. I intend to use it on the rifle that it is mounted on with my pvs14 and move the Photon to another rifle. Just haven't got all the gear together to do that yet. I need to figure out what kind of helmet I can get that won't break my bank and will fit my big head.

If this is visible to 400+ yards it's exactly what I'm looking for.

I intend to rig it up on a ps32 as a designator to make it easier for the person on the rifle to find the critters through the Aquila 6x. I'm not certain it will work but I'm going to give it a try.

Thanks 1lobo!

I think it will work well for you like that. It shows up as a white dot in the Photon view. I will check it tonight with my pvs-14 to see what it looks like and tell you. I can sure appreciate how you would need to use it as a designator. I've found critters with my ps32 and looked for them in the scope without success and had to look again with the ps32 before I had them located well enough to see with the NV. I have used the ps32 with both the Photon and my pvs4. The dot is bright enough to really stand out in the scope even at 400+ yds. I did a lot of looking at lasers before I settled on the Uni-Max IR. I was a little nervous about it being robust enough, but it definitely is.

I eased out into the rainy night and took a quick look at the lasermax dot with the pvs14 on and I get the same good view as I did with the Photon except the color is more green. Nice bright dot. I think you will be able to use one easily for a designator.

It is a very precise beam. It seems, however, to be about 3moa at 100yds. It carries the same sharpness throughout the distance that you use it, excepting some ghost images below 100. I see some extra dots sometimes around 30-40 yds. Problem is, I think, that the beam is hitting something with facets that reflect it differently. It might also be something in the air. Every time I've been out to check it lately, it's been a tad misty. It's not hard to tell which dot is the wrong one, as it is larger and diffused. I know which is right for sure because I'm looking at it through the Photon and the crosshairs are right where I want it to be. I told you I was putting shots in the 10 ring at 100 yds. I am not sure that I wasn't influenced by the Photon cross hairs. I do seriously believe it could be done via the laser alone as all you have to do is shoot to the center of the laser dot.

I wouldn't be afraid to use it out to 200 yds, and I'm the kinda guy that absolutely won't take a shot on game unless I'm sure of a killing hit. As much as I hate coyotes, I want to kill them, not just hurt them.

I am sure you will enjoy and appreciate it when you get it Chris. One word of warning, don't lose that itty bitty allen wrench that they send with it. That rascal is tiny and I don't know where you could find another. I've got mine secured in a safe place and hope it doesn't fall out of my hands sometime where I can't see it. I haven't measured it yet, but intend to so I can at least try to order a spare. You will have to fiddle with the adjustments to get them to suit. Because of placement on the gun relative to the scope, the dot shows under the crosshairs at short range. I tuned mine at 100 and for some reason at 200 it's a bit off on windage. I suspect my under the barrel picatinny is probably not as well aligned as it should be.

I was thinking some more about your question and realized how very appropriate it is. There are a lot of lasers out there that either bloom excessively or just don't focus well enough to use as a sighting device. The Uni-Max laser is good enough to sight with reliably. I looked at several and it was the best that I could find at that price point. I expect that the higher priced ones should provide the same capability, but I have no basis for knowing that.

Thanks Lobo. That's a lot of good information. I've been toying with the idea of the UNI-ir for almost a year now and I think I'm going to pull the trigger on one soon.

Do it and make sure you buy the rifle set up. (Pressure pad Switch)

Good advice Poppadopalis. You might want to consider the pressure pad cover too. It is not neccessary at all, but it does make it easier to operate. I happened to acquire it by mistake, but it does help. The pressure pad switch is really handy and most definitely a batter saver for the IR.
