Your bullet probably didn't survive that shoulder bone; they're tough critters; anywhere 6-8" to the left and he wouldn't have run, though. 55 gr. NPT in .223.;)

If you can sever that spine w/neck shot or (I prefer) between the eye and ear (better aiming point), but there is a little leeway, that'll take the run out of 'em.

Wow!! How far? I’ve hit neck, dead center shoulder, and even back a good bit behind the front leg and they’ve all dropped with that same combo. Farthest shot has been about 125yds.
I have hunted this large acreage( 640 acres) for several years and had productive hunts for coyotes and hogs. The hay crop was delayed about 6 weeks due to heavy rains and I was waiting for baling to be over in order to have good visibility across this meadow of 80 acres. I had taken no coyotes since March 22 as they went quiet for pup season and had no response to any call I put out. Hogs in the first 2 pictures were at a range of 170 as recorded by my newly acquired ATN Thor 5 LRF thermal scope and my first outing using it. Can you guys sense my excitement at being able to hunt at night?:giggle: The next 2 hogs were closer (128 yds) as it took a little time for me to walk up over a long ridge to find the sounder again after shooting the second 2. I counted 14 in this sounder and they scattered for the timber but the last sow paused just long enough for me to get on her at 255 yds, my longest ever shot on hog or coyote.
For Hunt0168, I do not personally eat them although some folks I know do process them and say taste is very good.
For hm1996, thanks for the anatomy video, did not realize how low the spine drops, as you can see by three of the shots I also prefer the ear to eye for the quick, DRT shot.:)
Thanks to all who encouraged this old man with your comments, it's like saying sic-em to a bulldog!(y)

I hadn't seen your other post when I posted the anatomy pics, LOL. Bet those two dropped on the spot. (y)

I'm always a bit leary of neck shots as I'm not as sure exactly where the spine is, depending on whether head up or down. Everything stays in the same place in relation to the eye and ear, no matter head up or down. :ROFLMAO:

I had never noticed a hog has such long spinous process on their thoracic lumbar. That's why the spine and vitals are lower compared to other critters. I have to be careful when hunting some of the exotics as I tend to shoot a bit high if I'm not paying attention, as most of the African antelope are similar in that regard, having vitals in lower 1/3 of body cavity.
