Lead sleds

I’m considering purchasing a lead sled for sighting in my longarms and for my boy to target shoot with to relieve some recoil and help keep him interested. Is there any particular brand & model that stands out? Hopefully there’s some folks on here using them that can give their opinion.

I have used them they do help for recoil. I used to use them for all load development and sighting in. But I was told by a couple different people that the lead sleds can tear up your gun because the gun is going to recoil, and if you take it out that energy has to go somewhere so it ends up pounding on the optic or gun itself. Don’t know if there is any truth to that or not but kind of makes sense. I liked shooting off of it the. Was having some accuracy issues and the scope company told me about the lead sleds tearing stuff up. So I was going to give you a heads up on that. What are others theory on lead sleds tearing stuff up post away.

Interesting and I appreciate your honest input. I typically shoot off a set of sandbags I’ve made when shooting from my bench. I really think the lead sled would be more for building my sons confidence back up for his recoil issues from our slug guns since we are in a shotgun only state.

I bought one and was using it with 25 pounds to tame the recoil of some big bore rifles for which I was developing load data (400 Whelen, 375 Whelen, 460 Van Horn). While shooting the 400, the scope mount sheared off and the scope was destroyed. It will no longer adjust and since it is an old steel tube Weaver, there isn't much to do for it. A friend used his with the same amount of weight and had his 375 H&H stock break at the wrist.

For your application it should be fine but I won't have another one.

I use mine all the time for slug, muzzleloader and load development with larger calibers. I have not put 25# on mine, but only because I had a partial bag of lead shot(20-21#). I would think a stock, especially one that doesn't fit the sled correctly would have greater chance of damage. Some pump shotguns do not support well. I have not strapped or fastened my shed down, it can slide a bit.

You may want to let him shoot lighter calibers until he becomes comfortable before moving him on to something larger. He will become a better shot if he isn't programed to flinch. If you will have him wear ear plugs plus ear muffs he will handle everything much better also. Good Shooting !

I sold my lead sled after a couple range trips. Sand bags and have him wear ear muffs. I just didn’t like the lead sled at all. Let him shoot 22s and such to have fun and treat the slug gun like an honor/being a man thing. Psych him up for it!

I have heard the same as zr600 said and have read about it in reviews when I was in the market for one. I did go with a Hyskore dual damper machine rest #30275. The largest caliber I use is 308. First off I had problems with quality, the front V notch or forearm support was 20 degrees off center, sent the whole thing back. I received a second one same thing, so I contacted Hyskore not the vender. They sent a new V notch right away and it was off about 3 degrees from center. I fixed that with a file. The slide rails would not retract due to the forward gun support being bolted to tight from the factory. I just took the whole thing apart and polished the slide rails and readjusted all nuts a bolts so it would slide without a problem. They say use a light machine oil on the slides I used graphite. It needs to be solid on a bench no movement at all, rest or bench. It works and comes back to original point of aim. I looked at a lot of them and liked this one even having the problems.
