Lets see those food plots!

I know many of y'all are getting ready for deer season like we are.

We went up to the farm on the weekend of sept 12th and did some much needed trail pruning and got our seasonal food plots put in.

I had come up a few weeks earlier and did some pre-tilling with the disk, and turned the ground again just before we spread the rye seed out, and rolled it in with the cultipacker afterward.

We put 200 lbs of seed across 6 select plots.

We got a small drizzle the next day and several light rains in the following 10 days and they greeted up nicely!

We do have plans to start to add clover patches onto these for some more year ground graze, but the deer are already out there munching based on all the tracks!

Last but not least, this is my plot back in the woods

Im also very happy to have got my ceiling sealed in my deer blind to keep the mice out of the foam board i had between the ceiling studs . Picked up some 1x8 rough cut pine from the local Amish sawmill and it turned out great

So how are your food plots and fall deer season prep coming?

My season opened today. Will be out with the recurve. I have not planted plots in years, should plant a few small kill plots in the woods but that can be hard to do in my area. I have planted one years ago, but small plots rather than one big one, catching them in funnels heading to the food.

My first attempt at one. 2/3 is a brassica mix that is coming in nicely. The 1/3 clover (directly in front of the camera and to the right), not so much.
I roto-tilled and then broadcast the seed. Lacking a cultipacker, I just ran over the whole thing with my compact tractor. It worked pretty well.

Lou - that's a beautiful kill plot you got there.

We've run various brassicas in the past, turnips grow real well for us, but the last time we did those voided they take over and outgrew everything else we'd mixed in with them.

We definitely have plans to expand what we've got going, including adding some Clover patches and others.

I've got a 15 to 20 yd wide by 160 yd long shooting Lane cut back in the woods that the back two thirds of I'm going to have a layered plot in.

And we do have plans to add fruit trees to most of these areas

Big Lou, if you can't get a deer there, you can't get a deer anywhere! Great food plot! (y)
Thank you. It’s more of a hobby than anything. I’ve been doing plots for probably about 10 years now. Never killed a deer on home base yet. I’ve had a couple good ones but, nothing show stopping. I’d been nurturing and protecting a really nice up and comer non typ. I wasn’t even sitting my place at all for like three years. Wanted him to get comfortable and stay. It was working famously until last November when he got tagged by a vehicle. This should have been his “big year” too.

We lost a lot of deer last winter and antler growth has been terrible this year as a result of them being so poor coming out of it. I highly doubt I’ll see anything I’d consider a shooter this fall. I’m content to just give back in my own way. Confirmed bucks from last year are all 30-40” smaller. Bad year to be a big Buck Hunter.

herd wise - at least what we have on camera so far - our antler growth shows the same this season. we've still got some decent bucks showing up - including what my brother describes as the largest walking body deer he's ever seen on the property - but he's an outlier so far.

everyone else seems smaller this season than last.
