I'm interested in building my own shooting rest/cleaning rest, something I can use for both. I've got plenty of scrap wood laying around so I figure I might as well use it (plus I'm cheap). Thanks in advance!
 
A collapsible screw jack, the kind many cars have in them for the spare tire, makes the awesome basis for a front rest. I have not made one yet but I saved the jack when I junked my old car to make one. It would seem easy to extend the wood base back and mount a cushion for the buttstock.
 
I was going to post something on a gun vise for cleaning and working on them. This is a good idea to save a few dollars.
 
I am in the process of cleaning up a screw jack I found in my barn, I will post pictures of the finished vise. If anybody has one they made and wants to post pictures you're more than welcome, it will be a good reference for people who want to make one.
 
This is my "semi homemade" Forrester rest. I basically kept the gold anodized base and tossed everything else. The top is just a flat 1/2" thick piece of cold rolled I machined to size and welded a round bushing to the bottom to fit the pin. The shaft is a 1/2" ejector pin, and the base is a piece of 1" thick Aluminum Tooling Plate I cut to size and tapped for 5/8" Allen Head Cap Screws and jam nuts. I ground points on the ends of the screws. It works better than anything I could buy. The top is a leather rabbit ear bag from Protector.

 
Needed a cleaning fixture for range when shooting competition. Wanted something to hold rifle securely when left unattended to go to target pits so covered jaws and screws w/old innertube and fastened woodworker's vise:

to my Kennedy machinist cabinet in which I carry rifle sights, ammo, cleaning gear, etc used during match.









Not a shooting rest, but great cleaning fixture at range or on work bench at home.
