I'm setting up a new gun for my brother, was looking at the Leupold VX-1, 4X-12X. 40mm. Have any of you guys had your hands on one of these? The picture I have shows 2 small dots on the verticle, below the crosshair, is that right? will mount it on a 22-250. Or does Leupold offer a better varmint crosshair? Scope #61265. Seems like a good deal, can get it for $235 plus shipping. Thanks.

If you are referring to Leupolds Boone & Crocket reticle they are actually short crosshairs for elevation and 10 mph windage. They do offer a varminter reticle with finer crosshairs and 20 mph windage with varmint ranging. I think the varminter is offered in high magnification models now. Although I bought the Boone & Crocket, the varminter was what I went to get but was concerned about the crosshairs being to fine for low light shooting. It has worked out great.

Thanks for the info. the Balistic Aiming Reticle is what Leupold calls LR, or LRV, in the books i have. i think the Boone & Crocket, and Varminter c.hairs are only offered on the high-dollar models. the one i was looking at does have a short bottom post, and 2 dots between the post and the X. seems like it should work good on long shots? I just ordered the scopes yesterday, hopefully we'll have the guns zeroed by next weekend? i thought about getting one of the varminters, but the VX-III model was another $200. so far the SS 700, with scope, rings and bases, and 100 rnds of ammo is only $800. give or take, not bad today.

Just saw your post today Redsnow. Here's a link to the info on those reticles-- www.leupold.com/products/Info_Ballistic_Aiming_System.htm

Oughtta work just fine-- sight in for 200, then each of the other stadia r 300, 400, and 500 for lower post (if it doesn't work perfect try sighting in for the 400 or 500 yd. stadia perfectly, and that'll probably make the trajectory fit the reticle better). If it still doesn't work as advertised then u'll have to use a zeroing system similar to the mil-dot guys where the reticle isn't designed to zero at exact hundred yd. intervals (or try a different load/bullet). Here's a writeup on the system that may help some-- www.ottllc.com/specialtypistols/sp20.pdf Nice thing about Leupold is that they provide all the info u need for establishing a precise zeroing system right at that site. Should provide for a good tactical windage system also with those reticles, i see.
